Fosprenil is an injection solution that is virtually colorless and is sold in glass vials. The active ingredient in its composition is disodium salt of polyprenols phosphates, obtained from coniferous raw materials. Auxiliary components include ethanol, Tween-80 stabilizer, water and glycerin.
The main purpose of the drug is to treat and prevent diseases of viral origin, strengthen the immune system, and also accelerate the recovery of animals with prolonged inflammation.
The instructions for use also indicate the properties of a hepatoprotector, which provides reliable protection for the liver, gastrointestinal tract and kidneys.
Fosprenil normalizes the activity of the cat’s internal organs and systems, stimulates the development of kittens and prevents the occurrence of infectious diseases. It is actively used in nurseries in bad epidemiological conditions, before exhibition events or breeding pets.
The main diseases for which Fosprenil is indicated include:

Composition and expiration date
1 ml of the drug contains 4 mg of the active substance (disodium salt of polyprenols phosphate). Glycerol, ethanol, Tween-80 and water are used as auxiliary additives. The medication is packaged in glass bottles of 10 or 50 ml. Hermetic closure is ensured by rubber stoppers with aluminum inserts.
Fosprenil should be stored in a closed manufacturer's box, away from feed and food. Storage is carried out in a dry, ventilated place, inaccessible to direct sunlight, at a temperature in the range of +4...+25 °C. Unused medicine is disposed of in accordance with legal standards.
The operational period from the date of release is 24 months. After opening the original packaging, the drug should not be used. In addition, it is prohibited to use it after the expiration date.

Instructions for use
Fosprenil is administered by intramuscular, subcutaneous, oral, rectal and intravenous routes. In addition, it can be used to rinse your pet's nose and eyes.
Dosage
To combat viral infections with intramuscular administration, a single dosage of 0.1-0.2 ml per 1 kg of body weight is used. In this case, a single dose per 1 kg of weight for kittens is 0.3 ml, and for adult cats - 0.2 ml. The daily dosage for kittens is 0.9-1.2 ml/kg and 0.6-0.8 ml/kg for adults.
To prevent viral diseases, the medicine is administered in 1 dose or 1 time every 3 days. To strengthen the immune system, Fosprenil is administered simultaneously with the vaccine in different syringes.
If your pet has a severe or moderate form of a viral disease, you can combine the medication with symptomatic and pathogenetic drugs. The combination of Fosprenil with Gamavit and interferon inducers improves the effectiveness of therapy.
Where and how to inject?
Intramuscular injection of the drug is performed into large skeletal muscles. This can be done in the upper thigh area. The needle is inserted from the tail side. Another injection is given in the upper third of the shoulder. In this case, the needle is inserted from behind the abdomen.
Subcutaneous injections are made into the withers or the area between the shoulder blades. Before doing this, you need to slightly lift the skin with your fingers, and then insert a needle under the fold.
IV administration requires experience. If it is missing, it is better to seek help from a veterinary clinic. The specifics of the IV injection are as follows:
- The pet's paw is tied with a tourniquet.
- A needle without a syringe should be inserted into the manifested vein.
- A syringe containing medication is then attached to the needle.
- Blood should enter the cavity of the syringe.
- The tourniquet is removed and the drug is slowly injected into the vein.
The injection solution cannot be combined with saline formulations.
Orally
Oral administration is practiced 15 minutes before meals. However, the drug cannot be combined with other medications. The method is suitable if there is no opportunity or skill to administer injections.
Rectally
Rectal administration implies a dosage increase of 2 times (if necessary). However, not all cats agree to such a procedure.
Rinsing the nose or eyes
In some cases, Fosprenil is used to wash the mucous membranes of the eyes and nasal cavity. The prophylactic dose is 0.05 ml of active substance per 1 kg of pet’s body weight. Medicinal - 0.2 ml/kg - for an adult animal and 0.3 ml/kg - for puppies and kittens.

Being a low-toxic drug, Fosprenil practically does not cause unwanted reactions and health problems.
According to GOST, the medicine belongs to hazard category 4 and has no mutagenic, carcinogenic, embryotoxic or teratogenic effects. After injections, there is no irritation of the skin, and the medication itself does not have allergenic properties.
During course therapy in individual cases, an allergic reaction may occur in cats. Having noticed the first manifestations of intolerance, you should stop injections, use an antihistamine and contact a veterinary clinic for help.
Allergy symptoms include high body temperature, rapid heartbeat, drowsiness and apathy.

Fosprenil stimulates the main parameters of the natural resistance system (bactericidal activity of blood serum and phagocytosis), enhances the humoral immune response to vaccines, thereby increasing the body's resistance to infections and reducing morbidity. Fosprenil activates metabolic processes in cells and, accordingly, increases weight gain while reducing feed costs. Fosprenil has antiviral activity against paramyxoviruses, orthomyxoviruses, togaviruses, herpesviruses, coronaviruses and some other viruses.
