If you notice that your cat is bleeding from the vulva, it is understandable that you are worried, as this sign indicates that something is wrong and you are likely facing a health problem.
Cystitis, uterine infections, trauma or tumors may be some of the reasons why your cat is bleeding, but what should we do in these cases? The first step is to immediately contact a veterinary center, since some pathologies that can cause these symptoms can be fatal.
In this article, we will talk about the causes of bleeding in cats, explaining the main reasons why a cat is bleeding and how to treat it. Everything you need to know next, but don't forget: a visit to the vet is essential.
Clinical picture and symptoms
Sometimes in cats you can observe pink discharge from the genital slit. They can look completely different:
- Transparent pinkish discharge in small quantities.
- Bright pink thick discharge.
- Purulent pink discharge.
- Pink liquid with an unpleasant odor.
The intensity of the discharge also varies. This may be an isolated case, or the fluid is leaking constantly.
This condition can be completely asymptomatic or accompanied by severe symptoms. The most common symptoms are pain, fever, itching in the genital area, and lethargy.
Main symptoms
Signs of urinary dysfunction are visible to the naked eye: the cat pees more often than usual. If the volume of daily urine excretion is exceeded, then we are no longer talking about pollakiuria, but about polyuria. This can be understood by the litter in the cat's litter box.
For example, if you used to change it once a week, and recently - 2-3 times a week, it means that a serious failure has occurred in the cat’s body. For reference: the normal volume of urine excreted in an adult cat is on average 28 ml (about half a tea cup) for 2-3 visits to the litter box per day.
Frequent urination may be accompanied by other signs - increased thirst, discharge of blood and pus along with urine, fever, weight loss. Due to frequent urination, the water-salt balance is disturbed and the appearance of the pet worsens.
The fur on the hind legs, belly, and lower part of the tail is constantly wet, emitting an unpleasant odor. For cats, which are naturally very clean animals, this causes considerable discomfort, forcing them to constantly lick themselves.
It is worth observing the cat's condition. Perhaps the dry food is too salty or she has eaten too much of it. If pollakiuria is associated specifically with the diet, then within a day urination will normalize.
What to pay attention to
Representatives of the cat family are very clean, so the owners of the animal may not immediately notice pathological discharge from the genitals. Indirect signs should alert you.
The first thing that arouses suspicion is that the cat often licks the perineum (every 15-20 minutes). Frequent urination is the second warning sign. Itching manifests itself as follows: the animal rubs its perineum on the floor or some objects. All indirect signs should force the owner to pay close attention to the pet.
How to treat pathology?
When brown, pink or white discharge appears in a cat due to natural causes, no special treatment is prescribed. If the owner does not intend to breed offspring, it is better to sterilize the pet. In a castrated cat, such problems disappear on their own. It’s another matter when blood flows from the genitals due to the progression of a dangerous disease. A treatment regimen that includes the following groups of drugs will help stop the disease:
An examination will help to cope with the situation, on the basis of which drug treatment will be prescribed.
- Hemostatic. Prescribed only by a doctor, they are used in cases where bleeding occurs without stopping due to a violation of the hematopoietic process.
- Antibiotics. They are used when there is pus with pathological ichor in the vaginal discharge, which indicates the addition of a bacterial infection.
Sometimes, with heavy bleeding, conservative therapy is powerless. Then the doctor decides to treat the pathology surgically. During surgery, defects that bleed are eliminated, as well as affected internal organs, including the uterus, are removed. After the operation, rehabilitation is carried out. Fluid may still be released from the genitals, so the animal must be under the supervision of a doctor who strictly monitors how recovery is progressing.
Causes
The owner is unlikely to be able to independently determine the cause of the problem, so at the first sign you need to consult a doctor. The causes of pink discharge can be physiological or symptoms of disease.
Let's look at natural causes first. They are associated with physiological processes in the pet’s body.
Pink discharge from the uterus may appear in the first week after conception and a week before giving birth. This is considered a physiological norm and is not a cause for concern. After childbirth, there may also be discharge for 10 days. They are transparent, pinkish in color and odorless.
Cats go into heat periodically. In this case, the secreted liquid may have a slightly pinkish color.
Also, pink mucus and liquid can be symptoms of the following diseases:
- Trauma to the vagina or uterus.
- Kidney or bladder diseases. Cats often suffer from urolithiasis. During the period of exacerbation of the disease, pinkish discharge is characteristic. The same symptom manifests itself as cystitis (inflammation of the walls of the bladder).
- Inflammatory process in the uterus or vagina.
- Oncological diseases of the reproductive organs.
- Complications after unsuccessful sterilization.
- Complications after childbirth (remnants of the placenta in the uterine cavity, etc.).
- Defects and fistulas between the vagina and rectum.
If the cat is sick, the discharge may be accompanied by other symptoms.
Benefits of sex during pregnancy:
- During sex, endorphins are produced - hormones of happiness. They are transmitted to the fetus through the blood, having a beneficial effect.
- During intimacy, muscle fibers contract, thereby training the uterus in preparation for childbirth.
- Seminal fluid contains prostaglandins, which contribute to the “ripening” of the cervix before childbirth.
- During sexual intercourse, blood supply to the pelvic organs is activated, and the baby’s nutrition improves.
- The psychological state of both parents will be much better if their usual life does not change for the worse. The desired woman will be calm about the relationship, and the man will not think about starting an affair on the side. You can try new sex positions, which will be a way for spouses to get bright emotions.
Negative effects of intimacy:
- If a woman has had miscarriages, sex can provoke an increase in uterine tone and termination of pregnancy.
- With isthmic-cervical insufficiency, the cervix shortens and the internal os opens slightly. Sex can cause progressive shortening of the cervix and lead to miscarriage or premature birth.
- Placenta previa is a good reason to refuse sex, because... The placenta is very low in the uterus, and during sex it can be detached with bleeding. In this case, there is a direct threat to the life of mother and baby.
- The presence of sexually transmitted infections in any of the partners during unprotected sexual intercourse can provoke infection of the amniotic fluid and infection of the baby.
- If you have sex too often without a condom, your microflora may be disrupted and thrush may develop. The fact is that sperm has an alkaline pH and when it enters the vagina, it reduces the acidity of the vaginal secretion, which promotes the growth of pathogenic bacteria and fungi.
Diagnostics
Cat diseases are successfully diagnosed in modern veterinary clinics, where there is all the necessary equipment for this. To make an accurate diagnosis, your doctor may prescribe the following tests:
- Inspection and palpation.
- Ultrasound examination of the uterus, ovaries, kidneys, bladder. If the problem lies in diseases of these organs, then such a study is sufficient.
- Blood and urine tests. These studies will help determine the presence of an inflammatory process in the cat’s body. A urine test may suggest an attack of urolithiasis.
- Vaginal smear (to determine microflora and possible infections).
- X-ray examination. This method allows you to detect tumors and metastases in cancer.
- Tissue biopsy for suspected cancer.
Cat diseases have been well studied, so diagnosis is not difficult for specialists.
Treatment
Pink discharge in a domestic cat is treated depending on the underlying disease. Treatment can be conservative or surgical. Both methods have been used successfully.
Inflammatory processes in the uterus, kidneys and bladder are treated with antibacterial drugs. Antibiotics are prescribed by a doctor, as some drugs have a negative effect on the animal’s liver or kidneys.
Conservative treatment methods also include physiotherapy. The method is used to eliminate the consequences after surgery or inflammation of the uterus or ovaries.
The chemotherapy method will help to cope with single localized malignant tumors. Usually 1-2 treatment courses help.
Surgery is indicated to remove malignant tumors. And also, if necessary, remove the infected organ if conservative treatment does not produce results. For example, if fragments of the placenta remain in the uterine cavity and they are decomposing, then it is better to remove the organ due to the threat of sepsis.
Caring for your cat during treatment
No matter what kind of treatment is carried out, the animal in any case needs increased care and attentive care.
If your pet has undergone surgery, the stitches must be hidden, otherwise the cat may damage them. In order to cover the operation site, you can put a blanket on the animal or make a good bandage.
The diet of a sick pet should be light but nutritious. This is necessary so that the body does not spend a lot of energy on digesting food.
A cat needs to drink even if it doesn't ask. In this case, you can feed her using pipettes or a syringe (without a needle).
A sick animal should have a secluded corner where it can lie quietly. It is necessary to lay a disposable diaper and change it as needed.
Disease Prevention
To keep your animal from getting sick, you need to properly maintain and care for it. preventive measures will help avoid many diseases or serious consequences after childbirth.
It is not recommended to abuse hormonal drugs to control the reproductive cycles of an animal. It must be remembered that frequent use can negatively affect the animal’s well-being and cause irreversible processes in the reproductive system. It is prohibited to exceed the dosage of hormonal drugs and the duration of the course.
During delivery, it is necessary to follow the rules of antiseptics. The birth should take place in a clean place where the cat can feel calm.
Mating should only be done with a healthy cat that does not have genitourinary infections. This circumstance can be confirmed by a certificate from a veterinary clinic. It is strictly forbidden to let a cat go outside during heat. Since in one hundred percent of cases this will end in pregnancy from an unknown cat, which may be contagious.
A sterilized animal must be shown to a veterinarian once every six months for an ultrasound of the reproductive system. This must be done, since sterilized cats often develop neoplasms.
If there is any suspicious pinkish or red discharge, the animal should be shown to a doctor. This will help to recognize the disease in time and begin treatment.
