List of documents for a cat
The following documents must be available for the animal:
- pet purchase agreement;
- generic metric;
- pedigree (obtained based on metrics);
- passport from the veterinary clinic.
Purchase agreement
The purchase agreement is concluded between the breeder and the buyer. It must include the parameters of the pet: breed, color, age.
The document confirms the process of transferring rights to a kitten from the breeder to the owner. It also contains information about both parties. If the new cat owner plans to sterilize the pet in the future, this must be indicated in the contract.
Generic metric for a cat
The birth certificate is issued by the club in which the mother of the purchased kitten is a member. It is issued after the animals are examined by the club for compliance with breed characteristics. This procedure is carried out 45 days after the kittens are born. Based on this metric, the owner subsequently draws up a pedigree for the pet. At the time of purchasing a kitten, the metric should be issued by class=”aligncenter” width=”550″ height=”366″[/img]
Pedigree
The pedigree contains identification data about the baby himself (breed, gender, color, nickname) and about his relatives up to the 4th generation. Their breed, color and nicknames must be indicated, and if there are any, titles and awards. Here they also provide information about the club that issued the document: its name, emblem, address, signatures and seal. A pedigree may be needed even if you decide not to participate in breeding, for example for exhibitions.
Decoding of titles according to the WCF system:
- CH is a champion of his breed;
- ICH - international champion of the breed;
- IGCH is a great international champion;
- ECH - European champion of the breed;
- EGCH - big European champion;
- WCH is the world champion in his breed.
Veterinary passport
A veterinary passport is another very important document. It is advisable for owners of all cats, even outbred ones, to have it. Here are recorded:
- vaccinations that have been given over the entire period of life;
- the medications the animal took are indicated;
- information about the current state of health and previous diseases;
- parasite treatment data;
- information for identifying the animal: name, gender, age, color.
In the pedigree of a cat, various abbreviations may appear before the nickname. They indicate that the animal has a title.
Cat lovers club "Moscow"
Activation- this is an inspection of the litter, determining the compliance of the kittens with the requirements of the breed standard, the general condition of the kittens, the presence or absence of defects or shortcomings in each kitten. Activation is carried out by a felinologist or breeder.
Based on the results of activation, kittens and litters receive registration documents confirming their breed, color, apparent health at the time of activation, and compliance with the rules of the WCF felinological system. The entire litter must be activated - regardless of whether the kittens go for breeding or castration. Activation is carried out no earlier than 8 weeks after the date of birth of kittens.
According to the WCF rules, any breeder working under the WCF rules must register the cattery in the general list of catteries of the World Cat Federation in Germany. The club has no right to issue a pedigree without indicating in it a kennel registered with the WCF.
The club issues documents for kittens only after the kittens have been examined by a felinologist and if the parents of the kittens have exhibition grades!
To register a litter:
1. Call the club and agree on an activation date (no earlier than 8 weeks after the date of birth of the kittens). According to the rules of the club, activation must be carried out by a felinologist, i.e. a person who has completed felinological courses and has a diploma in felinology. At the request of the breeder, activation is carried out in the club, or a felinologist instructor comes to the house. If you have completed the courses and have a diploma as a felinologist, then you have the right to register yourself.
For at-home activation, call or write: Lyudmila Alekseevna Makarova
, international category expert for all breeds (WCF All breed judge) tel.: +7-916-441-5245, +7-495-442-6316, e-mail
NOTE:
Kittens are ACTIVE, not activated, these are completely different concepts. For more information, see the meanings of the words activate and activate.
2. During activation, the felinologist examines the kittens, determines their colors, and checks for the absence of defects. That is why activation is carried out no earlier than 8 weeks after the date of birth of kittens, and not immediately after birth. The colors of kittens of some breeds may change during the first two months of life; defects may not be visible in very young kittens.
The litter is then registered in the club's studbook and is issued a four-digit number in accordance with the current Studbook numbers. A breeding certificate is issued for the litter, and simplified pedigrees (metrics) are issued for the kittens - two generations of ancestors, except for the kitten itself. To speed up the process, download the necessary documents from the club website in advance:
Breeding certificate and Pedigree for a kitten (metrics). Fill out one breeding certificate and metrics on the number of kittens.
Kittens without the right to breed will receive a pedigree with a note - not for breeding.
3. If you have a diploma as a felinologist, you register the kittens yourself. You also fill out the documents for the litter yourself. You send the breeding certificate completed on the computer to the club by e-mail, after which the club registers the litter in the Stud Book and issues a four-digit litter number.
You fill out simplified pedigrees for kittens (metrics) with this number and give them to kitten buyers. You can have your metrics stamped at the club (for free), but it’s easier to have your own nursery stamp and use it. A sample of the seal must be provided to the club.
4. Please send completed documents electronically - only AS AN EXCEL FILE or DOC FILE! There is NO NEED to send a scan of a printed document with your signature, as well as PDF, JPG, TIF, ODS, ODT and other formats!
5. NOTE:
You submit a breeding certificate to the club, and give simplified pedigrees (metrics) to buyers. The metric is only intended so that the buyer of the kitten can later exchange it for a full 4 or 5 generation pedigree. All the information that is in the metrics is also in the Breeding Certificate, only in a more compressed form.
If you immediately order complete 4- or 5-generation pedigrees for kittens in the club, without giving the metrics to buyers, then there is no need to do the metrics at all.
You send the club a Breeding Certificate for the litter and indicate in it which kittens need pedigrees.
The sale of kittens, according to the rules of the WCF, is allowed from the age of 3 months: >>>>>>
6. Along with the breeding certificate, the breeder is obliged to transfer or send electronically to the club copies of the pedigrees of the litter's parents, as well as their title certificates (senior title), if these documents were not issued by the Moscow club. In the absence of these documents, it is impossible to produce pedigrees for the kittens, so the club registers the litter and issues a four-digit litter number only after the breeder provides copies of the pedigrees of the litter's parents (electronically via e-mail).
7. The metric/pedigree registration number includes:
• RU-0179 - number of the club “Moscow” in the WCF system, shows that the pedigree was issued by the club “Moscow”; • LO or RIEX (LO is the standard genus, and RIEX is the experimental one); • four-digit litter number = breeding certificate number; • number of the kitten in the litter (in the form of a Latin letter - A, B, C, D, etc., according to the number of kittens in the litter). First come the cats, then the cats; • year of birth of the litter (last two digits); • through a fraction - code designation of the breed.
For example, the number RU-0179-LO-4576A-07/MSO means:
• LO is the standard gender; • 4576 — number of the Breeding Certificate (number of the litter according to the Stud Book); • A — number of the kitten in the litter; • 07 – shows that the kittens were born in 2007; • MCO is the code designation for the Maine Coon breed.
8. A four-digit Breeding Certificate number is issued by the club. This number is unique for each litter of the club.
9. The number of the kitten’s simplified pedigree (metrics) and the number of its full 4- or 5-generation pedigree are the same number.
10. The names of all kittens of the same litter must begin with the same letter of the Latin alphabet. The owner of the nursery chooses the letter for the litter independently. Usually breeders take letters in alphabetical order - the next litter, for example, is F, the next one is G, etc.

Dear breeders, be careful when filling out documents!
How to make documents for a cat from scratch if they are missing
An animal is not always purchased immediately with the entire package of certificates and certificates. Some breeders sell kittens without metrics and pedigree, but much cheaper than from the club. In this case, you are acquiring what appears to be a purebred animal, but this has not been confirmed by anything.
If during the process the owner decides to participate in breeding, they will need to try to obtain paperwork for the cat. It is better to immediately ask the breeder whether he has activated the litter in the club. If yes, then you need to take his patrimonial metric, on the basis of which you will then receive a pedigree.
If any documents for the cat are missing or are only partially available (pedigree of the mother, but no information about the father), it will be difficult to register the cat. Since there is no actual information about the pet’s ancestors, you can get a certificate from the club. Based on it, the initial pedigree is subsequently drawn up. It gives the right to experimental breeding.
With this certificate you can participate in exhibitions, mating even with titled cats. But even if mating has occurred with a titled animal, the offspring are still considered experimental.
There are two ways to obtain a breed certificate (and a pedigree based on it).
- Sign up for an examination at the club, where a specialist will determine whether the animal matches the breed characteristics (certification).
- Apply for participation in the exhibition of ordinary domestic cats. Before the show, the pet will be sent for an examination to determine whether it matches the breed.
You also need to be prepared for the fact that you will be denied a pedigree. The club can do this immediately, before the examination (this is due to the reluctance of the club itself). In this case, just contact another one. If the refusal was based on the results of an examination, the cat does not correspond to any breed characteristics.
A similar procedure is also suitable for those who are interested in how to find out the breed of a kitten and obtain documents for it. If he is taken from a shelter or picked up from the street.

What actions should you take to formalize your pedigree when you have the metric in hand?
There are several ways to legally register a pedigree for a cat. The easiest way is to make documents about the breed for a pet purchased with a birth certificate and a photocopy of the pedigree of its ancestors.
If the original birth certificate, received from an official institution and issued in accordance with international standards, is already in the hands of the new kitten owners, the situation is greatly simplified. You can make a pedigree using it within one year. Time is counted from the moment the animal is born. After the expiration of the period, it is also possible to obtain a document certifying the breed, but this procedure becomes more complicated.
The animal's birth certificate indicates:
- registration number, index;
- information about the breeder;
- names and colors of the cat’s parents, their dates of birth;
- information about several generations of ancestors;
- pet's name, date of birth, gender and color.
It contains data - the name and location of the club where the metric was issued. The seal and signature of the manager must also be present. To register a pedigree using a club document confirming the breed of the animal, you should contact the above institution.
So, if a kitten is purchased with the PCA system metric, to start registering the pedigree, you will need to go through the following steps:
- Find out the club's opening hours and make an appointment;
- provide metrics (original document with all its components);
- pay the full amount for the service of obtaining a pedigree;
- pay the penalty if there is a delay.
The pedigree registration process takes from two to four weeks. When it is necessary to make a document urgently, for example, in a day, payment is charged at a double rate.
If the organization involved in issuing pedigrees is located in another locality or state, you can agree on the execution of the document through the post office or ask the club to send photocopies of the pedigrees of the cat's purebred parents.
The first option involves the following steps:
- You need to deposit money into the institution’s bank account for registration of the pedigree and pay a fine if you miss the deadline. In addition, the cost of postal services is paid.
- The original metric should be sent to the legal address of the organization responsible for registration. All fields of the document must be completed. A photocopy of the payment receipt is also sent by registered mail. A scan of the original metric, a photocopy of the receipt indicating that the person has paid, and the tracking number for sending the registered letter are also sent to the appropriate e-mail.
How to register a pedigree for a cat?
After the kitten is six months old, you need to contact the club that the mother cat belongs to. The club carries out certification of the kitten, and if the animal meets all the basic standards of the breed, a pedigree will be established.
The pedigree contains information such as the name and emblem of the club, contact numbers and address of the club, the number of the issued pedigree, as well as information about the animal - gender, color, breed and nickname. A complete pedigree contains information about the mother and her ancestors, up to the third generation; at the same time, not only her achievements are indicated, but also the titles received at exhibitions.
It is also mandatory to enter information about the father, the origin of the cat and the issuance of the pedigree. Having such a document, you can take part in exhibitions, as well as carry out breeding.

Kitten documents
1: bought a black British maintenance kitten. His parents are clubbers. I would like to know if I can join the club, and if so, what is needed for this?
Answer: first of all, you need to order a pedigree for it based on the metrics obtained when purchasing a kitten. Then you are free in your actions. Join any club you like by paying an entry fee.
2: You said that paperwork increases the price of a kitten, and if you buy a kitten not for exhibitions and breeding, are documents needed?
Answer: if a kitten is not purchased for exhibitions or breeding, it would seem that documents are not needed. However, it often happens that as time passes, people's plans and moods change. Either you will want to know what kind of ancestors your pet had, or you will feel sorry for sterilization and the question of mating will arise. We have had many cases when the owners of a male cat came to their senses and wanted to register a pedigree, but it was too late.
3: tell me how to get documents for a cat (2 years old), white color, pedigree unknown, because... She was given to us at the age of 6 months. Now we have 7 kittens, this is our second litter and we want to complete the paperwork.
Answer: alas, this is impossible. If the pedigree of the cat is unknown, then the kittens are illegitimate, that is, outbred. If you want to concoct fake documents for kittens, then this is not a question for us.
4: my British blue cat is 6 months old, we were deceived about the pedigree. I want to know: can I buy a pedigree for my cat? If I can, then where?
Answer: a pedigree is a document in which all prerequisites are written down.
