Pharmacotherapeutic group

Anthelmintic drugs, tetrahydropyrimidine derivative. ATX code: Р02СС01

Pharmacological properties

Pyrantel is an anthelmintic agent that acts on nematodes. It acts on the muscles of intestinal nematodes by depolarizing their neuromuscular junction and blocking the action of cholinesterase. Non-moving parasites are removed from the intestines due to peristaltic movements. Does not irritate or cause worm migration. It acts on mature forms and parasites at an early stage of development, but does not affect larvae during their migration in tissues. The drug is used primarily for infections with pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis) and roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides). Can be used for hookworm infection; more effective in treating duodenal hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale) infection than American hookworm (Necator americanus). After oral administration, the drug is poorly absorbed from the digestive tract. After oral administration of the drug, it reaches very low concentrations in plasma, at the limit of detection. After taking a single dose of the drug 11 mg/kg body weight, the maximum plasma concentration achieved after 1-5 hours (Tmax) ranged from 0 μg/ml to 0.1 μg/ml. There is no data regarding the penetration of the drug through the placenta and into the milk of a nursing woman. The minimal amount of the drug resorbed from the digestive tract is partially metabolized in the liver to N-methyl-1,3-propanediamine. About 93% of an oral dose of the drug is excreted unchanged in the feces and no more than 7% is excreted in the urine either unchanged or in the form of metabolites.

Indications for use

Enterobiasis Ascariasis Ankylostomiasis Necatoriasis

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to pyrantel or other components of the drug. Myasthenia gravis (treatment period). Concomitant use of piperazine. Special instructions Special care should be taken: in children under 2 years of age; in patients with impaired liver function (the drug may cause a short-term increase in the activity of aspartate aminotransferase - AST); in malnourished patients and in patients with anemia (anemia). After taking Pyrantel, laxatives are not prescribed. When treating enterobiasis, all persons living together should be treated at the same time. To prevent re-infection, it is necessary to strictly follow the rules of hygiene (wash hands, trim and clean nails, avoid scratching the perineal area, change bedding and underwear daily). 14 days after treatment with Pyrantel, control parasitological studies should be carried out. The suspension contains sorbitol. The drug should not be used in patients with rare hereditary fructose intolerance. Sorbitol may have a mild laxative effect.

Interaction with other drugs

May increase plasma theophylline concentrations. The simultaneous use of piperazine inhibits the effect of pyrantel.

Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Adequate and strictly controlled studies of the safety of the use of pyrantel during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding) have not been conducted. The use of the drug during these periods is possible only if absolutely necessary, if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or child, and only under the strict supervision of a physician. Use of the drug in elderly people There is no information on the effect of age on the effect of Pyrantel in geriatric patients. Effect on the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery Considering the possible side effects on the nervous system (dizziness, headache, etc.), when using the drug, care must be taken when engaging in potentially hazardous activities that require increased concentration and speed of psychomotor reactions. .

Can cats have Pirantel?

Pyrantel pamoate is often included in antiparasitic drugs for animals, but it is usually combined with other active ingredients, such as praziquantel. The question of whether Pirantel can be given to a cat worries many pet owners. It is possible to use a human drug for cats, but preferably in the form of a suspension, since it is difficult to calculate the exact dose in tablets due to the high concentration of the active substance.

An overdose of a medicine can have serious consequences, so you should not self-medicate. It is necessary to consult a doctor so that he can correctly calculate the dose. In addition, the medication acts on certain types of parasites, so you must first get tested.

What is better for cats, tablets or suspension?

Pyrantel in different forms does not differ in its effectiveness. But it will be much easier for a kitten, like a small child, to swallow a tasteless liquid than to chew a tablet. The animal will completely refuse to swallow the whole pill. Therefore, if Pirantel is purchased in tablet form, it should be crushed to a powder and poured into the cat’s mouth.

Giving the suspension to cats is much more convenient; just measure the required dosage and pour it into the pet’s mouth. The cat will also not swallow liquids that are unpleasant to him on his own.

How it works

Pyrantel effectively destroys internal parasites. The principle of its action is to block the transmission of nerve impulses. As a result of such exposure, paralysis occurs, which leads to the death of the worms. After ingestion, the maximum concentration of the active substance occurs in just 1-3 hours, so the drug has a rapid action. It is capable of destroying only larvae and mature individuals, but does not affect parasite eggs.

The peculiarity of the medicine is that it is practically not absorbed into the bloodstream. The active substance remains in the intestines, and therefore effectively destroys roundworms of various types. Partially the active component is metabolized in the liver. Mostly excreted in feces. The antiparasitic agent helps the worms to come out, so they will not poison the animal’s body with decomposition products after death, which means the risk of intoxication is reduced.

Can cats take deworming medication for humans?

Pyrantel was originally developed for the treatment of humans, but due to its good tolerability and effectiveness, it is used as an anthelmintic for cats. The medication is used only for medicinal purposes and is not suitable for disease prevention.

The drug blocks the nerve impulses of the parasite, causing its paralysis and death, and promotes the elimination of dead helminths in the feces.

Ineffective against eggs and larvae, which migrate with the bloodstream for further development in other organs. Therefore, deworming courses with Pirantel are recommended to be repeated twice - after 3 and 6 weeks, when the eggs and larvae develop into the next generation of parasites.

The product acts on roundworms and nematodes. This family includes:

  • roundworms;
  • nekator;
  • pinworms;
  • strongyloid;
  • whipworm

Since the spectrum of action of the drug is quite narrow, it is important to clarify the type of helminthiasis pathogen in order to prescribe an effective course of treatment.

Indications for use

According to the instructions for use, Pirantel for cats is used, as for people, to destroy the following types of worms:

  • pinworms;
  • intestinal acne;
  • trichostrongylide;
  • hookworm;
  • roundworm;
  • Trichinella.

The antiparasitic agent does not affect tapeworms. It exhibits weak activity against whipworms, so other drugs are selected to kill them.

Note! Pyrantel is not used to prevent helminthic infestations in cats. For these purposes, it is better to choose a medicine designed specifically for animals.

How to use

If you don’t know how much Pirantel to give your cat, it’s worth considering that the dose is calculated based on weight - 5 mg of the active substance per 1 kg of animal weight. If a suspension is used, then 1 ml of medicinal liquid is calculated for 10 kg of weight. For an average cat weighing 5-6 kg, 0.5 ml will be enough. For large pets, the dose can be increased to 1 ml, and for small kittens it can be reduced to 0.2-0.3 ml. To measure the exact amount of suspension, you can use an insulin or regular disposable syringe.

In case of severe helminthic infestation, the dose can be increased to 10 mg per 1 kg of weight. Only a doctor can calculate the exact dose. It takes into account not only the weight of the animal, but also the degree of infestation with worms, general health and other factors.

If tablets are used, a single dose for adult animals is ¼ tablet, and for kittens - 1/8. In case of severe infection, the dose is doubled, that is, adult pets need half a tablet, and kittens need a quarter.

The drug is given in the morning. The next morning the procedure is repeated. After 10 days, you need to retake the tests. If the tests are positive, the medication is repeated.

The suspension is forcibly poured into the animal's mouth. To prevent your pet from spitting it out, the liquid should be injected using a syringe without a needle into the cheek area or onto the root of the tongue. The tablet must be crushed and mixed with a small amount of food. Give the prepared treat to the animal. If the cat refuses to eat food with medicine, then the powder from the tablet should be diluted with water and given to the pet.

Before using an antiparasitic drug, the animal does not need to go on a starvation diet. Since Pirantel helps remove worms from the body, laxatives are not taken either before or after taking it. There is also no need to take other special measures.

Contraindications and side effects

The medication is strictly prohibited for use in cats in the following cases:

  • during pregnancy;
  • during lactation;
  • for infectious diseases;
  • when exhausted;
  • for severe liver and kidney diseases.

The drug is also prohibited for kittens whose weight has not reached 500 g. Do not use the medicine for kittens under 1 month of age.

Note! You should not combine the use of the drug with Piperazine, as it neutralizes its effect.

Pyrantel should not be taken together with other antiparasitic drugs. In such cases, the toxicity of the drug increases and the risk of poisoning increases.

If the recommended doses are followed, the drug is usually well tolerated by animals. Sometimes side effects occur:

  • vomit;
  • nausea;
  • increased salivation;
  • diarrhea;
  • depression and apathy;
  • refusal to eat.

In addition, if the components are intolerant, an allergic reaction may occur. It can manifest itself in different ways: hives, itching, redness, disturbances in the digestive system, etc. In this case, the use of the medication is discontinued, and the animal is given antihistamines and symptomatic treatment is prescribed.

Symptoms of poisoning

If the dosage is calculated incorrectly, Pyrantel can cause poisoning in a cat, although it is considered to be of low toxicity for humans. The following symptoms indicate poisoning:

  • nausea and severe vomiting;
  • cardiopalmus;
  • weakness;
  • excessive excitement;
  • lack of appetite;
  • impaired coordination of movements;
  • tremor of the limbs;
  • increased salivation;
  • convulsions;
  • heavy sweating.

If symptoms of overdose are detected, the pet should rinse its stomach. Then give an adsorbent to remove the toxic substance from the body. Symptomatic treatment or maintenance therapy (vitamins, immunostimulants, etc.) may also be required.

Owner reviews

Diana, owner of a 5-month-old kitten:

“When our child was diagnosed with worms, Pirantel was prescribed. I also used this drug for a kitten. The older members of the household also accepted him. All the medicine was tolerated well and the worms were completely eliminated. The main advantage is low price. A bottle is only 50 rubles.”

Victoria, owner of the Angora cat:

“I have been using Pirantel for a long time to deworm my cat. I carry out the procedure once every 6 months. There were no side effects. This medicine is present in almost all antiparasitic drugs for animals, only they are much more expensive. But why pay more if the result is the same?!”

Is it possible to feed a cat Pirantel on its own?

Not every owner, having noticed parasites in his pet, will rush to take him to the veterinarian. Many people prefer to deal with this problem on their own. Is it possible to give Pirantel for worms to a cat without a veterinarian's prescription? Such actions are completely acceptable. But before using the medicine, you must carefully study the instructions.

The drug has side effects and should not be given to children under 1 year of age or to kittens less than 3 weeks old.
