Taboo on Murzik and Barsik: choosing an original nickname for a cat?

Many new kitten owners don’t know what to name their pet. Perhaps the name of a member of the royal family would suit him. Or the hero of your favorite book, movie, favorite actor, writer or historical figure. There are a lot of interesting options among popular nicknames - Russian-speaking and foreign. And a win-win option - affectionate names for cute kittens.

Anto the cat:

Nicknames from Russian folk tales

The heroes of Russian folk tales are often talking animals. One of the nicknames can be borrowed as a nickname.

What to look for when choosing a name for a cat

By and large, a nickname for a cat must meet only one criterion: the owner likes it. The animal is absolutely indifferent to what you call it and what meaning you put into this name.

By the way, it’s worth dispelling several myths that cats only react to “correct” names, that is, there are some special laws that a potential owner needs to know.

What sounds do cats respond to?

You often hear that a cat's name must contain whistling sounds, since it is precisely these sounds that the cat's ear perceives best. It is for this reason, they say, that all street cats respond to the characteristic “Kys-kys!”

In fact, statements that an animal will not be able to hear any nickname have nothing in common with reality.

A cat's hearing range is at least three times wider than that of a human. There are no sounds that would be perceived by our ears, but would be inaccessible to the ears of a mustachioed one. But on the contrary - as much as you like. The fact that we “can’t even hear a rustle in the garden” has nothing to do with silence for a cat.

More than once I have seen how an Abyssinian woman dozing on the sofa suddenly raises her head, then crosses the entire apartment and sits down in front of the door. For me, this is an accurate signal: in about ten minutes my daughter will return, we can put dinner on the table. The cat simply adores her owner and, in an incomprehensible way for me, detects not only the sound of her steps on the staircase, but, it seems, unmistakably identifies the rustling of her car tires and even distinguishes her driving style.

So don’t bother yourself with nonsense: a cat doesn’t need the presence of “s” in its name to start responding to it. Let's say more: an animal may well ignore a call consisting only of whistling sounds, pretending that it does not hear them at all. Don't be fooled: this is psychology, not physiology!

Why doesn't a cat respond to its name?

The answer, in general, is obvious. A cat is an independent creature: it goes where it pleases and walks on its own.

The cat walks by itself

Nature intended cats to be predators and excellent hunters. Moreover, if dogs, having discovered prey, begin to besiege or pursue it, while showing wonderful abilities of “teamwork” and a very high degree of communication, then cats usually hunt alone. With this method of obtaining food, the ability to quickly react to a subtle sound made by a potential victim, calculate its origin and, silently creeping up, wait until the prey is within maximum reach, is vital for a cat.

It takes great hearing to track a tiny mouse.

But on the other hand, one can sympathize with the beast, forced, whether he wants it or not, to constantly analyze “personal prospects” from millions of different sounds, especially when a not very tactful owner turns on the TV at full volume and then starts shouting the same word, believing that if you raise your voice, the deaf cat will finally understand that someone is addressing her.

It has been noticed that many domestic cats refuse to respond to their own name, but show immediate interest in communication as soon as they hear the sound of the refrigerator door opening or the characteristic rustling of the packaging of their favorite food. This does not mean that the pet is stupid or deaf. We just have to admit that in the eyes of many cats, we are just an appendix to free food, a device for dispensing food.

My daughter’s Abyssinian knows her name very well. But the owner calls her pet with a characteristic sound, invented by her specifically for such communication and, as far as I know, not used in any language (the tongue is pushed away from the palate at the base of the upper teeth, the result is a very soft and gentle smacking). The daughter categorically forbids anyone else to address the cat in this way, and we treat such a quirk with understanding: an unusual sound for a red-haired beast is associated exclusively with its adored owner.

We have come to an interesting point: cats react not only to the specific combination of sounds that make up their name. The voice of the one who pronounces this name is also important for the animal. But even this is not all.

Cats can distinguish voices perfectly

Atsuko Saito and Kazutaki Shinozuki, Japanese scientists from the University of Tokyo, conducted an interesting experiment. Twenty different domestic cats were given a recording of the animals being called by name by five people, including their owner and four strangers, in different sequences. Moreover, in all cases the animal did not see the caller himself. Carefully monitoring the cats' reactions, the researchers came to the following conclusions: the animals in all cases demonstrate “orientation behavior,” that is, they recognize their own name. The pets clearly distinguish the voice of the owner from other voices, but... In not a single case did the cat go to the source of the sound, that is, did not respond to its name in the “human” sense. From the experiment, an interesting conclusion was drawn, which was brilliantly formulated by Rudyard Kipling a century ago: “Cats, unlike dogs and horses, have never been domesticated by humans.”

Speaking in the language of jurisprudence, the relationship between cats and people is not administrative (built on the principles of power and subordination), but civil law, that is, equal. About nine thousand years ago, when our ancestors began to engage in agriculture, cats themselves took the initiative to “get closer”, starting to hunt rodents threatening grain reserves, which ultimately suited both sides.

Hunting for mice is a cat’s personal initiative, and not the result of training.

But these independent animals are not genetically and evolutionarily tuned to follow human orders, and this is the fundamental difference between cats and dogs. Precisely due to the fact that the cat, in the words of Japanese scientists, “domesticated itself,” it builds its relationship with a person according to one scheme that is understandable to it.

Researchers have proven that, without seeing the owner, the cat does not respond to his call. Even if the animal perfectly sees the one who feeds it, it can “ignore” it in the most arrogant way. And this has nothing to do with the chosen name.

General recommendations when choosing a nickname

So, we can safely ignore which name will be easier for the cat to remember and hear. When choosing a name for a pet, it is much more important to be guided by completely different criteria. Let's try to formulate them.

Euphony

Dissonance is a violation of harmony. There are a large number of scientific works devoted to the euphony of speech. Of course, there is no need to study them just to choose a nickname for a cat, especially since in a certain sense, euphony depends on subjective perception.

But when coming up with a name for your pet, it is still recommended to avoid:

  • combinations of sounds that are not characteristic of the Russian language, and therefore difficult to pronounce (for example, the Japanese male names Yoshikezu, Keiichi, Mazeki are difficult for us to pronounce);
  • frequently repeated vowels (iou, auo) or consonants (vdr, vzgr, vsk, bssh);
  • excess whistling and hissing sounds;
  • unaesthetic combinations of sounds (thry, lice, dry, xry);
  • too short or too long name options.

Easy to pronounce and repeat

We will have to repeat the chosen name several times until its owner deigns to turn his precious attention to us. Therefore, you need to think in advance about not breaking your tongue when inviting your pet. The easiest way out of the situation is a shortened, affectionate name, but this also needs to be thought out in advance (Benjamin - Benya, Boniface - Bonya, etc.).

Ethical aspect

I do not share the position that calling cats by human names is unethical. But such a point of view exists, which means it must be respected.

You should not give your cat the name of your neighbor (especially if you are in conflict), or your boss (he may end up at your home, or you may simply find out about it from your co-workers, and a harmless joke will cost you your career).

Choosing the name of a relative or family member for a cat, even if its owner has a wonderful sense of humor, is simply inconvenient: all sorts of misunderstandings may begin.

Fashion is a bad advisor

When choosing a nickname for their cat, I would advise owners to avoid buzzwords or names that are popular at this particular stage of people’s lives: domestic cats can live twenty years or even more, but fashion, hobbies, and falling in love are temporary things.

Of course, a name for a cat is not a tattoo on its own body, but still, it is supposed to be chosen once and for life. Therefore, try to focus on something neutral or, conversely, eternal. A momentary impulse when choosing a nickname is a bad criterion.

Secret meaning

When coming up with a name for a cat, it is important to understand the meaning of the chosen word. And not only because, without knowing a foreign language and without taking an interest in the translation of a beautiful combination of sounds heard somewhere, you can find yourself in an awkward situation (cat nicknames such as Moron, Fak or Ass will sound ambiguous).

When choosing a name for a cat, avoid words whose meaning you don’t know

It must be borne in mind that, for example, in Japan, any name, male or female, carries a certain meaning. Let's say the original and very beautiful sounding Toshi is the emergency one, Jero is the tenth son, Akuma is the devil, etc.

Nicknames from foreign fairy tales

Foreign fairy-tale names sound exotic and whimsical; with such a nickname, neither a boy nor a girl will be left without attention.

How to be original?

In an effort to choose something original, it is important not to forget that cool nicknames for cats should not lose their euphony. Tailed animals remember well exactly how the owner addresses them and are quite capable of responding: therefore, the name should not be complex or include swear words. After all, guests may well ask what your pet’s name is or ask to call him.

Original

How do the owners name their pets? No lists can contain the fruits of the fantasies of breeders. The original nicknames for kittens are the names of the heroes of modern films, games and books: Avatar, Xenomorph, Mephistopheles. In addition, you can often find product names: Gin-Tonic, Big Mag. The names of cities sound good: St. Petersburg, abbreviated Peter, or Rostov.

How to choose a name for a dog

First, let's look at some great tips that will definitely help every owner choose the most successful name for a dog for their beloved pet. The word must be convenient, memorable and resonant, but at the same time symbolic and meaningful.

  • It is best to choose a word that is not so complex, consisting of only two syllables. Many experts unanimously agree that these are especially convenient for owners, as well as for the dogs themselves. Be sure to consider how well your pet will perceive the word when naming it. For example, it is known that most commands consist of just a couple of syllables. It is much more comfortable for an animal to perceive the same clear short word, reminiscent in structure of a familiar command.
  • Stop at a familiar word that will be easy for all family members to understand and remember. Nicknames of game or movie characters or cartoons are ideal.

  • Originality is also important, so you have to find a balance here. A unique name will be bright, special, and will prevent your pet from being confused with other animals on the street. This is a good solution, although it requires a more careful approach. That is, a concept can be familiar, well-known and easy to remember, but original precisely in the role of a name.
  • An interesting trick is to take a word in which the first letter is a consonant. Dog handlers note that animals perceive just such words better. They sound clearer, brighter, and are better remembered. Your pet will quickly get used to this nickname and will immediately begin to consistently respond to it.
  • Choose with the whole family. Be sure to consider everyone's opinions. This approach sets a particularly positive mood and helps all family members get used to the pet faster.

Pay attention to an important factor: a short, bright, simple nickname word is better remembered, sounds recognizable, and is more pleasant to pronounce.

Therefore, it is necessary to focus on laconic forms. This is more comfortable for the owner, as well as for the puppy himself.

Nickname and astral numbers

Among the owners, lovers of astrology and esotericism are increasingly found. They attach a special meaning to the name of the animal, try to combine the maximum number of meanings in it, to put into it a deep essence that will be understandable only to the owners themselves. Here the task of naming a dog turns into a real art.

The capabilities of modern astrology make it possible to take into account the date of birth of an animal, the location of the planets not only on that day, but even at a specific hour. The so-called astral number is calculated, according to which the set of letters that are optimal for the pet’s name is determined. In this case, the nickname becomes a kind of code in which the owners encrypt their wishes and goals. For example, if a puppy is being prepared for competitions, it must have a “winning” nickname.

Nickname based on the puppy's pedigree

An excellent solution is to take a name from a pedigree. Most often, when using a pedigree, they take an existing registered name and shorten it for ease of pronunciation in everyday life.

You can do it differently. For example, in a pedigree the name consists of three parts: Maria-Elsa-Alfonsina. And the owners connect the syllables: Marel. It turns out to be an excellent nickname, sonorous and memorable.

It is especially successful when you can use syllables from all parts: this is how Katherine-Alice-Rida turns into Caryl.

A very popular way to choose a name for a puppy is by combining syllables from the parents' nicknames. So Jessica and Rex can have heirs Geri, Ressi, Jax.

Dog name selection calculator

An interesting solution is to use specialized calculators to select a specific name. There are sites where in real time the program generates and selects the most suitable names for an animal based on various parameters.
