The biggest cats: is it worth having domestic giants?

Transformer

A soft house made of faux fur and plush is suitable for any small animal, but especially for sphinxes and smooth-haired dogs. The heat inside is retained due to the material and a special door. The advantage of the model is that it can be placed in two ways: placed on its side so that the entrance is on the floor, or placed vertically so that the entrance is on top. In the second case, you will get something like a jug into which you need to jump.

Buyers leave extremely positive reviews of the product and share stories about how their pets immediately fell in love with their new home. The seller’s generosity adds a pleasant experience: he includes a toy in the shape of a fish as a gift with your order.

In the kingdom of cats

As soon as the door to the apartment opened, dozens of animals stared at us.
At first, it seemed that cats were everywhere: they settled in baskets and houses, lay on the table and under it, perched on the windowsill and even on the window leading to the balcony. Some pets looked warily from distant rooms, others, who were closer, studied us from their “observation platforms.” Those who were braver managed to come up and began to rub their legs, purring loudly.

In the apartment of Natalya Sinkina, whom we visited, there are constantly more than fifty animals. In 2013, a woman founded the “Cat House” shelter. She says that she had previously helped homeless animals for many years, often bringing them home for foster care. After a while, I specially rented a room in which several cats lived. And soon she began renting space in the administrative building.

Now a separate apartment has also been rented for the shelter’s pets, where there are more than 60 animals.

“We agreed with the owners of the property, we are sitting there like mice. None of the neighbors know about the shelter. These are not dogs, cats have soft paws, you can’t hear them. The trays are filled with filler, so there are no odors, and we clean them several times a week,” says Natalya.

Sinkina admits that the number of animals is constantly changing, some manage to find new owners, but still cats are brought in more often than they are taken away.

“Of course, we understand that, in an amicable way, the shelter needs to be built somewhere separately. But, firstly, we don’t have the money for this, and secondly, it’s already difficult to even support these animals,” notes Sinkina.

By education, Natalya is an engineer, she is engaged in drawing up various construction estimates, and after work she spends almost all her free time on animals. The woman is helped by her friends - Svetlana and Olga. In total, three people have more than 100 cats in two apartments.

In addition, women often help out pensioner acquaintances who also have pets in their homes.

“Of course, sometimes older people can’t cope, so we take care of them, bring them food, and sometimes do the cleaning. Also, if necessary, we can put an IV on the animals or carry out other procedures,” notes Natalya.

Wall

The seller describes the house as a space capsule, and he's partly right. The body is made of wood and has openings located on both sides of the product. The dwelling is also equipped with a convex transparent hemisphere, reminiscent of a porthole.

The house is supplied as a kit of parts with the necessary fasteners for assembly. The finished product can be placed on the floor or mounted on the wall to save space in the apartment. The bolts required for installation are also included.

Fractures, bullets and other difficulties

A white cat extends its paw from the bed and seems to insist on being played with.

“This blue-eyed beauty, Peach, had a broken spine, the kitten was seriously beaten by dogs and left to die in the bushes. Doctors in Novosibirsk said that the pet would not live even a year, but he has been with us for more than five years,” says Natalya.

According to her, the cat constantly runs around the apartment, dragging its hind legs, and has not lost interest in life at all. Moreover, Peach often fights with other cats and shows them his character. Due to health problems, he has to manually empty his bladder several times a day.

Nearby, by the chair, lies a large fluffy Marquis. He lived on the street for several years and ended up in the shelter by accident when Natalya noticed him not far from home. After a few days of living in the shelter, Marquis began to cough. It turned out that he had five bullets near his trachea. Natalya notes that they cannot be pulled out because of their size; none of the doctors took on this operation.

“If people treated their animals responsibly, then we would have nothing to do, we would not suffer. I would like there to be serious liability for improper treatment, then many would think again before getting a cat or dog,” says Natalya.

A 16-year-old dog occupies a separate room. Alisa has a broken spine, she barely moves around the apartment and needs constant care.

“At night he smears everything, and then barks and calls me to clean it up. I come and do it. I tried to put diapers on her with tights, but Alice was tearing everything apart. It’s a shame to put her to sleep, so we’re taking care of her,” says the owner of the shelter.

Natalya says that there are many blind, lame and wounded animals in the apartment. The diagnoses of some cats are difficult to pronounce, and pets require expensive medications and various procedures. But diseases do not frighten the shelter workers.

“The most dangerous thing is rabies, but cats are domestic cats. In addition, no one bothers us to vaccinate animals for safety, which is what we do,” says Natalya.

In the form of a box

Based on numerous funny videos from social networks, we can conclude that boxes and cats are made for each other. If your pet is not indifferent to them, take a closer look at a house made of cardboard. It looks like an upgraded version of the box, designed specifically for pet relaxation.

There is an entrance on the front wall, and small round holes on the sides. Through them, the cat will be able to observe what is happening around without leaving the shelter.

The seller does not indicate whether the kit includes soft bedding. You may have to purchase it yourself.

What the neighbors say

“I also don’t advertise the fact that there are a lot of cats at home. A local police officer came to see me and said that there were no unpleasant odors in the entrance or stairwell, so there were no problems. Although, of course, now we have a lot of kittens, I’m trying to distribute them as quickly as possible,” says the owner of the shelter.

According to her, some neighbors know about the home shelter and often come to play with the animals.

“It’s a great way for them to relieve stress and get away from all the hustle and bustle. It helps me too. You know, even if I fall asleep in the hall without a blanket, I will never freeze, because I will be surrounded by cats,” Natalya shares.

However, the shelter also has its detractors. Sometimes Sinkina finds bags of garbage on her car.

“Most likely, the neighbors don’t like the fact that Alice barks at night. Of course, I understand them, but there are five dogs in the house, and stones fly only at mine, because she is not always the culprit of loud noises,” notes Sinkina.

With a toy and a scratching post

This game complex combines four items necessary for a comfortable life for an animal.

First of all, it is worth noting the house, decorated with plush outside and inside. In it, the cat will be able to retire and gain strength. You can also relax on a lounger installed on the floor above. It is covered with soft, fluffy material and is suitable for pets who prefer to observe the situation from above. The complex allows you to do other important things: play and sharpen your claws. For these purposes, a ball on a rope and a post trimmed with sisal are provided.

Price: from 3,080 rubles.

How much does it cost to keep animals?

According to Natalya, most of the money is spent on food and litter for trays. On average, 700-1000 rubles are spent on one cat per month. In addition, the initial examination of new cats, as well as their sterilization and vaccinations, costs a significant amount.

“Of course, veterinarians I know give discounts. But various tests, such as ultrasound, x-rays, blood tests, cost a pretty penny,” says Natalya.

She notes that the shelter is helped by caring citizens. Most often they donate 50-100 rubles; few people donate large sums.

“I’m completely in debt, I need to give 500 thousand rubles to one of the banks. I'm trying to pay it off gradually. Of course, I can’t quit my job, but I won’t stop helping. I live in chronic stress, because I’m afraid that one day I won’t have enough money to feed the animals,” shared Sinkina.

Houses and apartments for homeless animals

A separate area of helping animals that do not have owners is foster care. There are more than 20 such houses for stray dogs and cats in Barnaul. There, pets are treated for free and also undergo rehabilitation.

“Many wards soon find owners and end up in loving families,” says Marina Alferova. Together with other caring Barnaul residents, she runs the “Homeless” group on social networks and has organized a network of shelters in volunteer apartments and houses. The project is supported by hundreds of residents of the regional capital. Our joint efforts have already saved dozens of animals.

Marina says that she actively began helping cats in 2012, when her family moved from an apartment to a house and there was more space. Then I started buying equipment - cages, carriers, trays. Over the years, the number of cats has grown, and now there are just over 30 of them.

“I can’t shelter many animals, firstly, because there is no separate room, we also need somewhere to live. And secondly, you should calculate your strength. Must have time to clean the trays, feed them, and provide assistance. You have to rely on yourself and the help of loved ones,” says Alferova.

Marina’s endeavors are supported by her husband and son. According to the woman, they are already accustomed to the fact that there are always a lot of animals in the house.

“Of course, it happens that my loved ones slow me down a little, but sometimes my husband brings kittens. If there were other relationships in the family, I would not have agreed to this. You need to know when to stop,” Marina shares.

The largest cats and their features: 3 myths and reality

There are so many myths about big cats.

  1. Giant cats require a lot of food
. It is believed that large pets are difficult to feed, as they love to eat. Perhaps a big cat will eat more than an ordinary cat, but you will fatten it up, unless you want to make it the fattest cat in the world. By the way, representatives of the Guinness Book of Records do not want to recognize fat cats as record holders for humane reasons.
  2. If there is a large cat in the house, goodbye order.
Cats, like people, are different and have different attitudes towards order in the house. It’s not a fact that your favorite giantess will always jump on cabinets, tear down shelves and hit everything around. Cats can be very neat. If you want order, choose a calmer breed, for example, Siberian cats. The main thing is to immediately let your pet know what is allowed to do and what is strictly prohibited.
  3. At night, a cat can strangle its owner if it jumps on him
. Of course, if a 7-8 kilogram “monster” jumps on a person, it’s not pleasant, but why does a cat necessarily jump if the owner is sleeping? Most likely, she will do the same as during the day: mind her own business or sit not far from her owner. If the pet carefully climbs onto the bed and lies down next to you, nothing bad will happen from this.

A cat, in any case, is not a lion or a tiger, which exotic lovers sometimes don’t mind having. No matter how big the animal is, it is, first of all, a domestic cat, with its own character and disposition, which loves its owners and affection.

Walled up kittens and the benefits of sterilization

Shelter owners admit that they often encounter negativity; they try to poison some cats or leave them to die in agony. Yulia Shelkovnikova recalls that three-month-old kittens were thrown into one of the city’s basements in November.

“The homeowners' association walled them up, tightly sealed all the windows. We went to cut down locks, argued with the housing department, they called the police. We caught the kittens and saved all three,” Shelkovnikova shares.

She notes that the number of abandoned animals is growing every year: “Seven years ago, when we started, fewer purebred cats were thrown away. There were almost no British and Scots on the streets, and if they appeared, they immediately swooped in. We chose who should give it to. Now there are tons of purebred cats in basements, and no one wants them.”

She sees sterilization as one way out of the situation. “Almost all of our pets used to be pets. I don’t understand how people live next to uncastrated animals. One ordinary cat can cover up all the smells. In this sense, 20 castrated people compared to him are nothing. If people were more conscious and thought about the future, then there would be much fewer problems,” shares the owner of the shelter.

Houses with a play complex

Only owners living in fairly spacious apartments can afford to install such a model. Because it takes up a lot of space. But at the same time, having installed such a house, you don’t have to worry about the need to separately purchase toys for your cat.

By connecting several houses with different passages and platforms, as well as adding your pet’s favorite toys and fixing them on the surface, you can create a unique complex.

Huge cats that shocked the world

Your giant cat is capable of becoming famous, even if you did not strive for this at all. There are many cats in the world that have gained fame due to their size.

The fattest cat

The fattest cat in the world in the last decade is a cat named Meow. The elderly owner fed him up to 18 kg, although the normal weight of a pet should not exceed 5 kg. After the death of the owner, the cat ended up in a shelter, where he lost almost a kilogram and became ill. Despite serious treatment, he died at two years old. Even earlier, in the 80s of the last century, the cat Himmi left this world. He was 10 years old and weighed more than 21 kg.

Tallest cat

The tallest cat is considered to be the female Scarlet Magic, which belongs to the Savannah breed. Its height at the withers is 0.48 meters. At the same time, the record holder, who is included in the Guinness Book of Records, does not weigh too much - 9 kg.

Almost as good as the record holder are many representatives of the recently bred Ashera breed, which are as spotted as Savannah animals.

The cat was obtained by crossing an Asian leopard cat and a long-legged African serval. The meter-long “miracle” weighs an average of 14 kg.

The biggest wild cat

The largest wild cat is the liger, which is born from a lion and a tigress. Because of his gigantic size, he was called Hercules. They are really impressive: this “kitty” is 1.8 meters tall and weighs 408 kg.

The largest cat breeds: 8 domestic giants

The largest cats are divided into huge, very large and large.

Savannah

One of the largest representatives of giant cats is the Savannah animal breed - spotted cats similar to leopard and cheetah. So, if you are partial to these wild creatures, the shroud is just a gift for you. By the way, breeders bred the breed specifically so that real wild cheetahs would not end up in the homes of “lovers” of wild fauna and would not suffer in captivity. Now they can easily be replaced by huge spotted cats, weighing from 7 to 15 kilograms. The cost of pets ranges from $1500 to $5000.

Norwegian forest cat

Norwegian forest cats are not at all like wild animals. They are just big fluffy dogs who love to be outdoors. They have one feature that touches and distinguishes them from other breeds. If a Norwegian climbs a tree during a walk, he will come down from it upside down.

In general, cats are not capricious and very friendly, so they can make friends with other pets. The weight of males reaches 9 kg, and females 5.5 kg.

Turkish van

Other large cats are very beautiful - Turkish Vans, long-haired and very friendly animals. They get along easily with everyone who lives in the house, be it children, dogs or cats of other breeds. Vanirs are very active and inquisitive creatures, whose favorite pastime is catching thrown objects. At the same time, they perform such pirouettes that they can’t lag behind professional gymnasts. The weight of cats of the breed reaches 6 kg, and males - up to 9 kg.

British shorthair cat

British Shorthair cats are considered descendants of the Cheshire cat. Animals are very independent and easily tolerate loneliness. Another advantage of the British is that they rarely speak out and do not hold concerts. Pets will always find something to amuse themselves with, and will not unexpectedly jump on your shoulders. The average weight of a British dog is 7-8 kg.

Chartreuse

French Shorthaired Chartreuse are jealous by nature. If you have these cats, then you will not be able to have any other animals - Chartreux simply will not allow them to live.

Their character is such that it is impossible not to take it into account. Despite their large size, up to 7 kilograms, cats have a very weak voice.

Siberian cat

Siberian cats, which weigh 5-7 kilograms, cannot but inspire admiration. Unlike Chartreuse, they have an easygoing character and are distinguished by almost dog-like devotion. When a Siberian cat appears in the house, you don’t have to worry that mice will live there, since Siberians consider it their duty to rid the owner of rodents. But they miss their owners very much, do not tolerate separation well and are very jealous of other pets. However, Siberian cats will never demand attention when they see that the owner is busy.

Chausie

The Chausie breed, Hausie or Vauzie (all variants are acceptable in Russian), was obtained by crossing a domestic cat and a jungle cat. Chausies are natural hunters, and in this way they are very similar to wild descendants. But at the same time, they are very friendly and easily get along with all the inhabitants of the house. In addition, animals love to travel. This is one of the main features of this amazing, but not yet studied breed. The weight of a Wauzi cat reaches 7 kg, and that of a female cat – 5.5.

Ragdoll

Giants with a gentle character - this is how representatives of the Ragdoll breed are characterized, which translated from English means “rag doll”. Representatives of the breed got their name from their habit of relaxing in the arms of their owner. However, it will not be possible to keep such a “doll” for a long time, because it weighs from 7 to 9 kilograms.

There is plenty to choose from, you only rely on your strength and finances.
