What is the difference between Cat Chow food and other Purina brands?
The main feature of Cat Chow products is the presence of the Naturium complex, which is beneficial for the cat’s gastrointestinal tract. And also Cat Chow has a wider range than some other Purina brands. For example, the Gourmet line includes only wet food.
How much can you trust the Cat Chow brand?
One of the brand’s feeds is included in the register of goods on the Roskachestvo website. Based on the results of laboratory studies of Cat Chow Adult Sensitive food, we can draw some conclusions about the safety of the brand and the reliability of the information on product packaging.
Independent laboratory studies have revealed the following advantages of the product:
- the food is safe for animals. The product does not contain any pathogenic microorganisms (Escherichia coli, salmonella, etc.) or harmful substances (antibiotics, heavy metals, dyes);
- the information on the packaging about the fiber and protein content of the food is accurate;
- the food contains a sufficient amount of vitamins A, E, D3.
Among the disadvantages:
- information about the amount of fat in the composition is false. In fact, their content is greater than stated, but does not go beyond normal values;
- small amount of pesticides. Unfortunately, their content is not regulated by Russian legislation, so the presence of these substances did not affect the assessment of the safety level of the feed;
- lack of arachidonic acid, an essential substance for cats that accelerates the renewal of the epidermis, is responsible for the functioning of the circulatory system, and normalizes the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.
More detailed information about the results of independent studies of the product’s composition can be found on the Roskachestvo website.
Medicinal feed
For pets with health problems, Purina has developed a special line of foods that will help prevent the progression of the disease and minimize the risk of further complications. This category includes:
- Cat Chow Special Care Sensitive. Developed with the participation of nutritionists and created for pets who have problems with the gastrodigestive tract. The food contains chicory, beets and omega acids, which not only regulate the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, but also strengthen the animal's coat and make it more shiny.
- Cat Chow Special Care Urinary Track Health. This food is formulated for cats that have been diagnosed with urolithiasis or are predisposed to developing stones. A positive result from consumption is achieved due to the fact that the food contains a minimal amount of magnesium, which is responsible for the acidity of urine.
For pets with urolithiasis
Important! According to reviews from veterinarians, it is recommended to give medicinal food only to pets that have certain problems and diseases. If the cat is healthy, it is better to feed it food appropriate for its age category or preventative products
Reviews
There are practically no reviews of the food from veterinarians. Although, having seen the composition, they would not recommend this food. But if you ask a search engine the query “cat chow purina reviews”, you will immediately be offered hundreds of opinions written by buyers and cat owners.
Reviews vary greatly. Some people use the food all their lives and are quite happy with it, for others it didn’t suit them right away, and some animals developed serious health problems after changing their diet. Don't forget that all cats are different, and what suits one may not suit another. This applies even to expensive holistic foods, what can we say about the budget Purina? Before changing your diet to Purina, you should consult your veterinarian.
Cat chow products
Cat food "Cat Chow" is a dry product, which is presented in two lines:
- standard assortment - you can choose from it food for your cat, no matter what stage of life it is at;
- food for animals that require special care - these products have been specially created for adult cats with specific health problems.
Standard range
- The first on the list is Cat Chow food for adult cats with chicken and turkey meat. This product contains vitamin E, which helps the animal's body maintain natural defenses, as well as vegetables that ensure normal digestion.
- The next product is also intended for feeding adult animals - this is “Cat Chow” food with rabbit meat and liver. Its meat component is 14% meat, 4% rabbit and 2% liver.
- The third in the standard assortment is “Cat Chow” food for kittens with chicken meat. This is a completely balanced product that allows the baby to develop normally. It can be introduced into the diet of kittens from three weeks of age. To make it easier for the animal to consume the dry product, a small amount of it should be soaked in water. As the pet gets used to it, the amount of water is reduced and the share of food is increased.
Assortment for special care needs
- Let's start this line with Cat Chow food, which prevents the formation of hairballs. This product has a special formula that is enriched with dietary fiber, which prevents the occurrence of hairballs in the animal's stomach and intestines.
- The second position belongs to the product, the use of which is beneficial for animals with a sensitive digestive tract. Its peculiarity is the presence of high-quality protein, which is easily and quickly digested, as well as an optimal balance of vitamins and fatty acids - Omega-3 and Omega-6.
- At the third stage is the product “Cat Chow” for castrated cats and cats after sterilization. The ideal ratio of proteins and fats allows you to maintain the animal’s optimal weight and keep its muscles in good shape, and these two conditions ensure a normal level of activity for the pet after spaying/castration.
- The following product will take care of the health of your pet's urinary system. This is achieved due to the presence of special minerals that not only support the health of the urinary tract, but also ensure an optimal urine pH level.
- The health line is completed by a new product – cat chow triple protection cat food. We can say that this product combines two existing foods - for the health of the urinary system and the control of hairballs, and exhibits an additional effect that is aimed at preventing plaque and tartar.
Advantages and disadvantages
Like any dry food, Cat Chow brand products have their advantages and disadvantages.
Among the advantages of Cat Chow nutrition, one can note the balanced composition and the presence of a vitamin and mineral complex of substances. The herbs in its composition bring another plus to Cat Chow food: their presence helps rid the tray of the specific cat odor.
Cat Chow food is suitable for almost any cat - you just need to make the right choice. The price is affordable for most buyers, and the food is available in many pet supply stores. You can safely purchase a large package and not worry that the food will spoil.
Speaking of disadvantages, we should point out the scanty meat content and the presence of offal. Accordingly, the nutritional value of 100 g of food is low, and consumption doubles compared to more expensive food. The chemical preservatives and odor and taste enhancers included in the food adversely affect the health of the cat.
In general, Cat Chow dry food is not bad for the premium class, and even its shortcomings fit into the framework of this category. The main thing is that the cat receives a sufficient amount of drink along with its food.
What kind of food?
Cat Chow dry food is produced by Purina, a well-known pet food manufacturer. The main principle of the company is to bring people and pets closer together, making their lives richer. Following it, Purina targets buyers with different financial potential.
The premium class, which includes Cat Chow brand products, is one step above the economy class. Cat Chow is a little more expensive than advertised cat food, so almost any cat lover can afford it.
Cat Chow food is available in dry form. Therefore, it is important to ensure that your cat's bowl is constantly filled with water. But dry food has a long shelf life.
The composition of the feed is balanced, although the meat content is only 4-8%. Its basis is by-products, flavoring additives, flavorings and antioxidants. And the admixtures of greens and herbs reduce the unpleasant odor from the cat litter.
I am pleased with the assortment of the Cat Chow brand. You can choose food for cats of any age with different delicate problems.
Rules for organizing nutrition for a castrated (sterilized) animal
It is very important to feed a castrated animal correctly:
- Organizing a balanced diet in accordance with the nutritional requirements of neutered cats on your own is quite difficult. It is not recommended to feed your pets homemade food; it is best to purchase ready-made food.
- If you plan to feed the cat yourself, the diet should be dominated by lean meats: chicken, turkey, rabbit. You can give rice, corn, wheat porridge. To cleanse the stomach and kidneys, they give a special herb that can be grown at home.
- To avoid obesity, you need to reduce portions. Food should be given twice a day, one serving of dry food - 30 g.
- There should always be clean, fresh, cool water near the bowl. The volume of water consumed by a cat should be 2 times the volume of food he eats.
- To improve the condition of the coat, skin, and strengthen the musculoskeletal system, the cat is given vitamin complexes. When choosing vitamins, you should choose those that do not contain magnesium and phosphorus. These trace elements contribute to the formation of kidney and bladder stones.
These simple rules will help maintain the health of a neutered cat. Organizing proper nutrition is the basis of caring for your pet.
Price and where to buy
Cat Chow, intended for cats after sterilization, for castrated cats, as well as for inactive animals, can be purchased in online stores, pet stores, and pet markets.
A 400 g package costs an average of 150 rubles. The price of a 1.5 kg pack varies within 500 rubles. A 15 kg bag costs about 4,200 rubles.

Comparison of Purina Van food with other dry food
Most cat food brands are represented in economy class, with the exception of ProPlan food, which is premium. The approximate composition of the ingredients in these feeds is as follows:
- Felix food is a wet food; has a low protein content (11.5%); reading the composition, it is not clear what kind of protein we are talking about; the amount of added vitamins and minerals is small; the cost of a pack of pouches weighing eighty-five grams is from 15 to 20 rubles;
- Dry food "Friskies" contains 13% protein, but neither the percentage of meat products nor their origin is given, the description of the main components is rather vague, vitamins A and D and a small amount of microelements are added; the cost of a one and a half kilogram pack of dry food is about 360 rubles;
- the amount of protein in Darling dry food is 26%, of which 10 are meat ingredients, the rest are vegetable; wheat is indicated as a source of carbohydrates, vitamins A, D3 and B (yeast) and a minimum amount of microelements are added; the cost of a two-kilogram pack is from 360 rubles;
- wet food “Gourmet” is presented in the form of pouches and pates, it contains 14% protein, but how much of it is plant-based, there is no data, although there is a clarification: meat products contain at least 4% duck; added vitamins F. D and E, as well as minerals; pouch cost: 30–30 rubles; pates - over 40 rubles;
- dry food "Cat Chow" contains 40% protein, of which 33% is meat and meat products; the composition also includes whole grain cereals (without specifying which ones) and a source of fiber - beet pulp and other dry vegetables; added vitamins A. D3. E and group B, the amount of listed minerals is greater; the cost of a two-kilogram package is from 400 rubles;
- ProPlan dry food contains 36% protein, of which 21% is chicken (not chicken meat), as well as dry poultry protein, egg white and vegetable protein (wheat and corn gluten), but the percentage of these components is not indicated; sources of carbohydrates are called wheat and rice; added vitamins A, D, E, C, group B (yeast) and minerals; In addition to dry food, there is wet and medicinal food; the cost of a one and a half kilogram package is over 900 rubles.
From the above list you can see that the composition of dry food “Friskas” and “Darling” is somewhat worse, “Cat Chow” is approximately at the same level, and “ProPlan” food is superior in the content of meat components, but is significantly higher in price.
Comparison of dry food "Purina Van" and "Perfect Fit"
Perfect Fit food is produced by MARS and is very close in composition to Purina Van. You can consider its composition in more detail.
Table: Perfect Fit food for domestic cats
Main components. | The rest of the ingredients. | List of vitamins and minerals. | Nutritional composition. |
Not all components have a quantitative composition:
|
| In international units (IU):
Amount of milligrams (mg):
| The company guarantees:
|
As can be seen from the table, the general composition of nutrients is approximately the same. “Perfect Fit” has more mineral supplements and they are described in more detail, but the composition of the main components is given without indicating the percentage. The cost of this food is slightly lower than Purina Van:
- packaging 190 grams - 66 rubles;
- packaging 650 grams - 330 rubles;
- large three-kilogram bag - 738 rubles.
Reviews about this food are not bad. If necessary, Purina Van food can be replaced with Perfect Fit.
Compound
Despite the fact that in large letters on the packaging it is written about a large percentage of meat content, grain crops come first in the composition. Which ones are not indicated, the percentage of content is the same.
In second position is meat, which occupies 33%. But even here, not everything is so smooth - the composition says that it can be both meat and processed meat products.
Then, finally, the specific ingredients are indicated. Products of processing of plant raw materials are added to the feed: 2.7% dry beets, 0.07% parsley. This is where the specifics end, followed by various vegetable protein extracts, vegetables, minerals and preservatives, yeast, vitamins and antioxidants and flavorings.
Energy composition and value
The food contains 40% proteins, 12% fats, 8.5% minerals, 2.5% dietary fiber.
Calorie content, oddly enough, is not indicated on the packaging.
Types of feed
Purina has a fairly extensive range; you can choose food that suits your cat's needs. The type depends primarily on the age, weight and health of the pet.
There are eight varieties of dry food in total:
- Cat Chow for kittens containing chicken. It’s easy to determine the age category from the name: the food is great for kittens up to one year old. It would also be wise to buy it for pregnant or lactating cats.
- Cat Chow Adult with chicken and turkey. If your adult cat leads an active lifestyle, then Purina marketers advise you to buy this particular food. However, it is worth considering that the promised chicken and turkey are very small there, about 4%. Instead of meat there may be offal.
- Cat Chow Adult with rabbit and liver. The liver of what is the secret of production. This food is the second option for adult animals leading an active lifestyle. In terms of performance, it is no different from previous feeds; the composition is identical.
- Cat Chow 3 in 1. Amazing food that saves you from all diseases. Serves as a preventive measure against tartar and plaque on teeth, protects the stomach and urinary system.
- Cat Chow Special Care Hairball Control. Special hair-reducing food containing more fiber.
- Cat Chow Special Care Urinary Tract Health. Contains less magnesium, i.e. safer for the urinary system. Indicated for the prevention of urolithiasis.
- Cat Chow Special Care Sensitive. Created for cats with digestive problems, it tidies up the skin and coat. Enriched with omega acids, contains chicory.
- Cat Chow Special Care Sterilized. Food for sterilized cats. One of the most popular foods. Designed to support your pet's optimal body weight.
However, in stores there are not only budget dryers from Purina, but also spiders for cats. The buyer is offered a choice of 4 types of canned food with pieces in jelly: with chicken and zucchini, with lamb and green beans, with salmon and peas for true gourmets and, finally, with beef and eggplant.
The manufacturer promises a completely natural composition without preservatives, however, feeding the food to animals under one year of age is not recommended.
Feeding standards
Since the food is not expensive, its energy value is low. Therefore, feeding rates are much higher than any holistic food, or even super-premium. For small cats weighing up to 4 kg, you need from 35 to 70 g of food per day. For cats that weigh more than 4 kilograms, from 70 to 105. Further - the larger the cat, the more food.
Advantages and disadvantages
Let's summarize. It's not all that good, it's not all that bad. One of the advantages of food is its low cost and availability. You can buy it in any store, even in a supermarket. Cats eat food with great pleasure, they like it. The disadvantages are the not very high-quality composition, the use of by-products and preservatives, and flavoring additives. Much is hidden from the buyer; the composition does not contain complete information. Has low energy value.
How to apply it correctly?
The daily intake of “Cat Chow” for kittens is determined by age. For a 6-12 week old baby, 25-90 g is enough. For kittens from 3 months. you can give 50-115 g. For adult animals up to 4 kg, the norm is up to 70 g, for larger animals (up to 6 kg) - up to 105 g. It should be remembered that in addition to industrial feed, the diet should contain fresh meat and vegetables. If your cat does develop intolerance to a food product, it is better to replace it with a higher quality one, for example, “Classy Cats”.

CAT CHOW food
Hello again!
A couple of weeks ago I picked up a kitten, although I already have two adorable kitties, which you can read about in my review. I just couldn't pass by. Yes, yes, now I can officially be considered strong and independent
And here is a nice baby girl, meet her, name is Masyanya. The girl was scared of the camera, so there are no more successful photos. So, today we’ll talk about Purina Cat Chow Kitten food with a high content of poultry.
I was prompted to buy this food by the veterinarian’s recommendations regarding Purina food that came to mind.
The packaging is a zip-lock bag in yellowish tones, on the front side of which the manufacturer beats himself in the chest, claiming that he did not put any dyes, flavors, or preservatives and in general everything is so white and fluffy. The packaging was a little chewed, it wasn’t removed far enough, and as a result the cat got hungry at night and tried to chew.
The manufacturer's lengthy reasoning on the fact that without their precious food a cat cannot grow in any way: Daily intake depending on the age and weight of the animal: The veterinarian determined the age of our baby to be three months, so we need about 50 g.
Weight: 400 g.
Shelf life: one and a half years. Store in a cool dry place.
Made in Russia.
Ingredients: Oh, high poultry content - it turns out to be fourteen percent. Hmm...
By the way, on the Internet the composition of this food is indicated differently:
Meat and animal by-products (min. 4% chicken), cereals, vegetable protein extract (min. 2% soy), animal and vegetable fats, fish and fish by-products (min. 2% salmon), minerals, yeast, copper sulfate (copper 12 mg/kg), antioxidants (E320, E321, E310).
There is even less poultry here and a lot of E-shek, so I don’t know who to believe. Usually I don’t pay much attention to the ingredients, but the cat has it, and besides, dry food does not require feeding.
In any case, cereals in the first place are no longer good. After all, the cat is a predator, so I don’t ask why it needs grain. Although I am not an expert and perhaps this is not a big problem. But if the terribly annoying salespeople in the store had not given me the opportunity to read the ingredients, I would hardly have taken this food, preferring food with a higher meat content.
Cost: 127 rubles at the Four Paws pet store, where I purchased it.
The pieces of food are small, triangular. They do not have a pronounced odor. The cats ate the food with great appetite, and two adult cats, whom I am currently transferring from natural food to dry food, safely pushed the little one aside and consumed her food, and also asked for more. I had to drive away as much as possible.
For example, Filyuska intervened in the process of a photo shoot: She noticed that the animal was not getting enough food and the dosage stated by the manufacturer was not enough for the cat, she asked for more. As far as I can judge from my amateur opinion, this means that the food does not contain enough components necessary for the animal.
As for the reaction of the animal’s body, fortunately, poisoning, vomiting or any other disaster did not happen.
But I noticed that the waste began to smell very sharply and unpleasantly, which had not been observed before. In addition, the food makes her a little weaker.
Personally, I didn’t like the food, so I don’t recommend it. I give two stars because at least we didn’t get poisoned. I will not repeat the purchase.
I am not a specialist in the field of veterinary medicine, but I just accumulate in my head very contradictory recommendations from veterinarians and online opinions, so I do not claim the truth of my judgments.
After searching for a food with a higher protein content that was suitable for both kittens and older cats, due to the fact that I was not successful in isolating the cats from each other during feeding, I opted for Akana food. Read about the results of switching to Acana in the following reviews. Murmyau everyone

Natalya writes:
Half a year ago I got a kitten of the British breed; at the time I gave it to him he was one and a half months old. I read about care and feeding on the Internet and found out that the breed has an increased chance of developing urolithiasis. To avoid this, I decided to feed only good premium or super premium food, and the choice fell on Royal Canin. Once again I went to the pet store and found out that it was out of stock, the seller advised me to take Cat Chow as an alternative.
The packaging of this food is cute and easy to open and close. The food looks like food, and the smell also seems to be nothing special. However, the kitten did not approve of it - it ate quite poorly compared to Royal Canin (it was usually poured twice a day, ate it right away, and the new one ate it little by little). While I finished eating the small 0.4 kg package, I noticed that somehow I began to shed more.
I looked at the ingredients carefully and the question arose: since when did 14% chicken become “high poultry content”? I thought there was at least 50 percent of it in the food, I should have looked at the composition before buying. I will not recommend this food and will not buy any more.

Good day to all. Today I want to share my review of Cat Chow food. We switched to it because after castration the cat began to eat Friskies poorly, although before that he didn’t eat it very well. It seems to be positioned as middle class, they also looked at Perfect Fit. But it’s somehow too advertised, and usually the more advertising, the more you overpay precisely because of it.
I would say the cat really liked the new food, he eats much better, maybe partly because it seems easier to chew. I also noticed that the poop smelled less. Otherwise there are no changes, the cat seems to be healthy.
I would also like to note that before choosing, I read a lot of reviews and realized that everything is individual. Some feed and everything is fine, others begin to have problems. Our cat is not purebred, he ate the same Whiskas from his parents and lived to be 17 years old. In general, I recommend it, especially if you don’t have a lot of money to buy premium food.

I decided to slightly justify the undeservedly criticized Cat Chow food. Many cat owners are looking for food with holistic quality at an economy class price, but that doesn’t happen! Of course, the composition is not very good, but do not forget to compare the price. Royal Canin, Happy Cat, Mnyams - all with the best composition, but at the same time twice as expensive.
Naturally, for a higher price, they can put more meat or better ingredients there. But the same Whiskas or Friskies are half the price of Cat Chow, which means the second one is still twice as good in quality. Now a little personal experience.
I took a 400 g bag to try, the cat crunches it with pleasure and is not capricious. The food granules are convenient, without a pungent odor. I finished the package, nothing bad happened. True, I noticed that the food consumption is more than that of Royal Canin. I am also confused by the name “preservative” without indicating what kind of preservative it is. In general, I recommend this food as an inexpensive and better alternative to whiskey and friskis.
Composition analysis
Despite the fact that Cat Chow's assortment includes cat food with different flavors, their composition is almost identical, with the exception of the percentage of plant components or the presence of other additives. In this case, the quality can be assessed by the components indicated in the first five composition. As an example, let's look at what components are listed on these positions for Cat Chow Sensitive food:
- cereals (whole grain);
- meat and processed meat products (20%, which is equivalent to 40% rehydrated meat and processed products, at least 14% poultry);
- vegetable protein extracts;
- vegetable and animal fats;
- fish and fish by-products (2%, equivalent to 4% of rehydrated fish and by-products, not less than 4% of salmon).
Next in the composition is a number of additives of plant materials, vegetables, mineral components, yeast, preservatives and vitamins. The manufacturer marks natural ingredients on the packaging with a “*” sign. But there is no such marking for preservatives and antioxidants, which suggests the use of synthetic raw materials.
Thus, the basis of Cat Chow food is cereals, since they “lead” the composition, and vegetable proteins. The bulk of the components do not have precise descriptions or indications of the raw materials used. Even for the very first of them - cereals - it is not indicated which crop the manufacturer uses. The situation is similar with sources of fats, meat and fish components, for which there is no data other than the minimum percentage of the latter. Vegetable protein extract is another component obtained from unknown plant materials, which, due to its origin, is not of particular value to the cat’s body. Sources of fiber are vegetable supplements, but here too the manufacturer saves by using primarily not whole vegetables, but their processed products.
In general, the amount of protein, fat, and fiber is within acceptable limits, but due to the minimal presence of natural meat and the dubious origin of most components, the nutritional value of the product is low, and accordingly, the consumption for satiating the cat will be increased.
Reviews from veterinarians
Natalia, veterinarian:
“Cat Chow offers diets similar to the range of similar brands in the budget segment. Despite the fact that the line contains options for animals with certain needs (for example, with sensitive digestion or for urinary tract health), if such features are present, I still recommend choosing a higher quality diet.”
Oleg Yuryevich, veterinarian with 8 years of experience:
“A feed with an average composition without high energy and nutritional value. Despite the balanced composition, the amount of necessary components is at the lower limit of the norm, and the bulk of the proteins are of plant origin. When feeding Cat Chow regularly, it is advisable to compensate for the lack of nutrients with other foods or supplements. In practice, there have been cases of digestive problems in animals eating Cat Chow.”
Let's summarize the main results
In general, the composition of Cat Chow food corresponds to what is stated, it is distinguished by its balanced components and naturalness. A big plus is the presence of vegetables, herbs, vitamin and mineral complexes in the food.
A significant drawback can be considered the addition of artificial flavors, flavor enhancers, preservatives, but this is quite acceptable for economy class. It’s also nice to have a wide variety of different series, made depending on the characteristics of the pet. Veterinarians believe that this food is quite suitable for feeding cats and is a worthy competitor among representatives of the economy category.
Owner reviews
Cat owners have different opinions about Cat Chow food: some keep their cats on this diet for years, others give it up immediately or after some time, noticing unpleasant consequences. Many people choose Cat Chow because of its low price, often after trying other foods.
So, one of the cat lovers purchased Cat Chow for kittens on the advice of pet store salespeople. The Don Sphynx kitten ate the new dish without much appetite, but after a few days he got used to it. The loose stools (observed when consuming the previous food) disappeared and the pungent smell of feces disappeared. The cat began to go to the toilet for hours, twice a day. The owner of the Sphynx is convinced that Cat Chow was ideal for his pet and is not going to look for a replacement food.
But there are also sad stories in which the Cat Chow brand appears. From the point of view of one of the owners, it was this dry diet that was responsible for the premature death of her cat. By the way, she purchased the food on the advice of a veterinarian.
This story lasted 4 years, during which the cat received Cat Chow, lost weight and moved little (which was attributed to his innate constitution). Even the pet’s periodic vomiting did not frighten the owner, who was sure that the body was simply getting rid of fur. After 4 years, the cat was unable to defecate on his own, and then treatment followed, which turned out to be ineffective.
