Vomiting in a cat and cat: we understand the problem and its causes

If your cat’s vomiting does not go away for a long time and the reasons for its occurrence are unknown, you should not delay visiting a doctor, because this condition may be a symptom of a dangerous internal disease. Particular concern should be caused by vomiting blood, accompanied by diarrhea with black feces. If you do not help your pet in a timely manner, the situation can end in death.

Types and reasons

Vomiting bile

The cause of bright yellow vomit in cats is liver and gallbladder disease. This situation can arise under the influence of many pathological factors. For example, a cat is constantly fed fatty and fried foods, or a viral infectious disease is progressing in the body. Sometimes the owner does not control the intake of medications prescribed by the doctor; as a result of an overdose, the liver takes on the main burden of removing toxins. If your cat vomits bile after eating, this may be a symptom of a heartworm infection.

Masses with blood

The main cause of pink vomit in cats and dogs is internal bleeding. It is important to pay attention to the nature of the blood impurity. If the vomit contains mucus and bright scarlet streaks of blood, then the damage is localized in the oral cavity or esophagus. If your cat is vomiting blood and it is brown or black, this is a sign of intragastric or intestinal bleeding. In such situations, it is unsafe to delay visiting a doctor, since internal bleeding rarely stops on its own.

The cat burps a yellow mass

Often this sign is related to the pathology of the animal’s hepatobiliary system.
Yellow vomiting can be caused by poisoning cats with food containing the appropriate food coloring. If you are worried about frequent vomiting of yellowish liquid, then most likely this is due to dysfunction of the liver and gallbladder, and a mass of this color is nothing more than bile. You should not delay a visit to the doctor with such symptoms.

Slime and white foam

White vomit with foam and mucus, which occurs once, does not pose a threat to cats. Perhaps the animal is regurgitating hairballs, which is considered normal. But when regurgitation of foamy saliva is constant, and other pathological symptoms are observed, such as refusal to eat, sudden weight loss, lethargy, drowsiness, this may indicate the development of such dangerous diseases as:

  • gastritis;
  • stomach ulcer;
  • helminthiasis;
  • respiratory disease;
  • rabies.

If your kitten is vomiting and white foam comes out of his mouth, this could be a symptom of an adrenal gland disorder. Vomiting with such a disease is not the only symptom. The animal suffers from severe diarrhea, and is also bothered by constant muscle weakness, depression, and apathy. A pathological reaction to the drugs used is a common reason why a cat vomits.

Spitting up food

With intestinal problems, the animal develops thinness.
If a cat vomits food and undigested particles with mucus, but this happens infrequently, perhaps the pet simply eats more than it should. In such a situation, the stomach is not able to digest large volumes and, in order to somehow alleviate the condition, the urge to vomit occurs. Poisoning in cats is also a common reason why a cat or kitten vomits. The animal regurgitates old food for a long time until the toxins completely leave the body. If the vomit contains green particles, your pet may have intestinal problems. Soon, due to pain and discomfort, it becomes noticeable that the animal is not eating and is losing weight.

Other reasons

If your cat vomits clear water on an empty stomach, it is most likely starvation vomiting. This often happens in the morning, when the animal does not eat anything at night and its stomach becomes empty. In this case, special treatment is not required; it is important to establish a diet, but make sure that the digestive organs are not overloaded at night.

Sometimes vomiting in a kitten occurs due to hairs getting into the gastrointestinal tract. In the cat's stomach, fur is not digested; in the intestines it also remains unchanged. Therefore, to get rid of hairballs, the body uses the vomiting center. Often your pet burps because he is in a hurry to eat more food, resulting in choking. In this case, it is important to establish a diet and ensure that the animal eats regularly.

Scarlet and pink discharge

By emptying the stomach, the animal is freed from fluff, an accidentally swallowed thread, or a bead, but not every owner knows what to do when a cat vomits blood. Fresh scarlet inclusions are released when the oral mucosa is injured by bone, pieces of unchewed food, or when a tooth falls out. With prolonged fasting, reddish traces are noticeable in the bile expelled by the stomach; the cat vomits with blood of a scarlet hue:

  • with a tumor in the esophagus;
  • in case of organ damage;
  • when the shell is corroded, which occurs after the use of drugs.

In case of intoxication, which occurs from poisoning with spoiled food, the cat vomits for a long time, and this leads to the rupture of capillaries, which color the saliva and vomit scarlet.

The pink foam that comes out of your pet’s mouth is formed when there is a strong cough that occurs during a cold or when the respiratory tract is infected.

First aid

The animal must abstain from food for a day.
If an adult cat or kitten is constantly vomiting and it becomes noticeable that the condition is worsening, you should urgently take the pet to the veterinary clinic. If poisoning is suspected, it is important to stop the intake of toxins into the body and give the animal more water. It is also worth stopping feeding your cat if the condition does not improve within 24 hours after a fasting diet; it is dangerous to delay a visit to the doctor.

Pink vomit indicates internal bleeding. Giving your pet medications intended for humans is strictly prohibited. Here you will not be able to help the cat on your own; you only need medical help.

Owner stories

Matvey: “I inherited a cat from my parents at the age of 10.
Some time ago he began to feel sick after eating. I live in a small village, we don’t have a veterinary clinic. A doctor from a neighboring town advised giving the cat Phosphalugel half an hour before meals at a dosage of 0.5 ml per 1 kg of weight. And at night, an hour after the evening feeding, I prescribed the gastroprotector Kvamatel 5 mg per dose. The cat's condition has improved. But we need to take him to a doctor for an accurate diagnosis.” Louise: “My cats accidentally ate raw fish and didn’t take care of them. After that, both began to vomit, the cats were not used to such food. Vomiting was stopped with a subcutaneous injection of Cerucal (0.1 ml/kg). For dehydration, a saline solution of 10 ml/kg was given. After that, the cats were taken to the clinic.”

Treatment of the problem

Before the doctor prescribes a treatment regimen, he will give directions for a series of diagnostic procedures, on the basis of which he can establish a final diagnosis. If vomiting of clear or saliva is a consequence of a viral infection, antiviral, antipyretic, antiemetic and painkillers are prescribed. In case of severe vomiting, the doctor will prescribe an IV with saline and glucose to prevent dehydration. An infectious-inflammatory disease is treated with antibiotics; in case of poisoning, adsorbents are prescribed.

The animal must be treated for helminthic infestation.

When infected with helminths, deworming is carried out. If the cat is old, in addition to basic treatment, it is important to strengthen the body’s protective functions. For this purpose, vitamins, immunostimulants, and interferon are additionally prescribed. If the animal vomits pink, brown or bright scarlet, it means bleeding has formed in the digestive organs. A conservative treatment regimen is prescribed. But if medications don’t help and it only gets worse, the doctor decides to perform surgery.

How can the owner help?

Any measures to help a cat with vomiting at home can only be carried out if:

  • the animal looks clinically healthy in appearance,
  • vomiting was one-time,
  • vomiting is no longer accompanied by any additional symptoms.

In all other cases, you should contact a veterinarian for help!

If a cat has a one-time vomiting, which is not accompanied by any further symptoms, and the vomit does not contain any foreign or alarming impurities, then the cat does not need to provide any special help.

After vomiting, you need to let the stomach “rest”, so it is advisable not to give the cat any food or water for 8-12 hours. To quench thirst, you need to prepare ice cubes and let your cat lick them to eliminate the possibility of vomiting water. After the specified time has passed, there is no more vomiting, the cat can be given something to drink.

If the water also does not cause any adverse reactions, you can start feeding. The first day it will be slimy porridge and lean boiled meat and fish. From the second day the cat can be fed as usual.

Medical nutrition

During therapy, in addition to the use of medications, it is important to put your pet on a therapeutic diet. Do not forget about drinking; to prevent dehydration, it is useful to add a solution of electrolytes to the liquid. The cat may refuse to drink such liquid. If you can’t get something to drink, the animal breaks out and IVs are placed in the hospital. Meals during treatment should consist only of natural products. The menu includes meat baby food, rice, boiled potatoes, chicken, low-fat cottage cheese and kefir. The number of meals is 4-6 times a day. If your cat doesn't eat enough, you need to remove the food. They switch to the usual diet gradually, gradually adding other foods.

How to avoid vomiting

If the reason your cat is vomiting is due to dietary errors, then to prevent repeated episodes you need to follow simple rules:

  • if it is necessary to change cat food, this should be done gradually: daily replace some of the old with new;
  • divide the daily dose of food into smaller portions, make meals more frequent;
  • switch your pet to natural food if the food causes vomiting;
  • If you have problems with fur, use special food for long-haired cats.

Vomiting in a cat is an indicator of problems in the organization of life. To eliminate this situation, you will need to analyze all aspects of keeping your pet and find the cause of the nausea.

If this has already happened once, it is important to constantly pay maximum attention to the quality of food and adherence to the nutritional schedule. I like3I don't like

Other possibilities

Another reason for the release of white foam from the stomach is malnutrition and even hunger . It just so happens that cats are very sensitive to lack of food. Their body will synthesize all the necessary digestive secretions in the same volumes for a long time, without reducing their quantity. If you don't feed your cat for a long time, the buildup of hydrochloric acid can cause stomach irritation. As a result, the same foamy vomit will occur. It is for this reason that the duration of a fasting diet for cats should not exceed one day .
