"Prazitel" suspension for cats and kittens: instructions for use

One of the most common diseases in cats is helminthiasis. This disease is caused by parasites that settle in different organs of the pet. Special anthelmintic drugs help fight this disease. In Russia, Prasitel is considered the most popular. This drug is produced in Russia and has a wide spectrum of action, that is, it is capable of removing parasites of various types. In this article we will tell you in detail how to use prazitel, and also share information about how it affects helminths.

Instructions for use

Pills

You can give the tablet to your cat in the following ways:

  • Forcefully open the pet's mouth and place it on the base of the tongue. In this case, the cat’s swallowing reflex will work, and he will be able to successfully swallow the tablet. Don’t forget to also pour some warm water into your mouth from a syringe without a needle, then the tablet will pass through the esophagus without any problems.
  • Crush with a teaspoon, and then add the powder to your pet’s food. It would be better if it was minced meat or canned cat food. This trick won't work with dry food. It is advisable to prepare such a portion of food that your fluffy eats it in one go to the bowl.

Prazitel

Suspension

If your pet refuses to eat or does not deign to consume the suspension, then it can be injected using a syringe. You will definitely need an assistant to hold the cat during the procedure. The volume of the suspension is calculated from the ratio of 1 ml to 1 kg of fluffy body weight.

Operating principle

Praziquantel and pyrantel inhibit fumarate reductase (a parasite enzyme), which is involved in the transmission of nerve impulses to muscles. Due to depolarization of muscle cells, static paralysis of the helminth occurs, which soon dies. Then the bodies of dead worms, as well as their decay products, are removed from the gastrointestinal tract.

After taking Prazitel, the active components quickly penetrate into the blood mainly through the intestinal walls. They are evenly distributed throughout the body, where they exert their effect. Their level reaches a maximum after 3 hours. Praziquantel metabolites are mainly excreted through the kidneys, and pyrantel through the intestines.

Important! Prazitel is a moderately dangerous drug (hazard class 3). When used in therapeutic doses it does not provoke negative reactions.

Dosage rules

For medicinal purposes, an adult cat should be given 1 tablet. per 4 kg of pet's weight. If you are carrying out prophylaxis, then give 1 tablet. per day, prevention lasts 10 days.

Such a preventive measure should be carried out once every 3 months, and then your pet will definitely not get worms.

If your kitten is not even 2 months old, then you need to calculate the dosage from the ratio of 0.25 tablets per 1 kg.

Pirantel suspension is an effective anthelmintic drug intended for children, but also successfully used in veterinary medicine

Dirofen tablets exhibit high activity against nematodes and cestodes that parasitize animals. Drontal is a modern safe anthelmintic drug for cats.

Milbemax is a combined deworming drug that effectively eliminates various types of intestinal parasites in the body of animals. Kanikvantel Plus has a wide spectrum of anthelmintic action and is destructive to trematodes, cestodes and nematodes

Use with other drugs

It is strictly forbidden to combine Prazitel with other anthelmintic drugs.

Because if the concentration of praziquantel in the cat’s body is exceeded, its condition will greatly worsen. For example, convulsions, tremors, loss of coordination, and hypothermia may occur.

For kittens and cats

Composition and properties of the drug

Prazitel is an anthelmintic with a wide spectrum of activity. It is presented in three dosage forms: the most convenient is a suspension, the more traditional are tablets for adult cats, as well as for kittens.

Composition of Prazitel suspension:

  • praziquantel (3 mg/1 ml);
  • pyrantel in the form of pamoate (30 mg/ml);
  • additional components.

The first 2 substances are active, they provide anthelmintic effect.

The suspension is a yellowish liquid with small solid particles suspended in it. It is packaged in dark glass or plastic bottles with lids with a control ring. Each cardboard box contains 1 container of suspension, a dosing syringe and instructions.

It must be used within 24 months after production. The expired drug is thrown away.

Interesting! Prasitel suspension should be stored at 0–25°C in a dark and dry place. The packaging should not be placed next to food or feed.

Prazitel for cats and kittens in tablet form has the same composition, but differs in the dosage of components:

  • praziquantel (20 mg per tablet for adult cats, 5 mg per tablet for kittens);
  • pyrantelapamoate (200mg/50mg);
  • potato starch;
  • lactose;
  • stabilizer E468;
  • calcium stearate;
  • gelatin.

Tablets for cats and kittens are yellow-green in color, have a flat-cylindrical shape, a chamfer and a dividing line. There is an imprint “PR” on their surface. They are packaged in blisters made of PVC and foil or polyethylene-coated paper (celled or cellless), 2 pieces each. The cardboard box contains 1 blister with instructions for use.

Prazitel for kittens and cats must be used within 3 years after manufacture. The expired drug is thrown away.

Interesting! A dark place with a temperature from -10°C to -25°C and humidity up to 50% is suitable for storing tablets. The drug should not be placed near food and feed. It should be stored at a height so that the tablets are not found by children.

Reviews:

Valentina: My cat is 8 years old, and for the first time in so many years I discovered worms in her. My friend recommended that I use the drug Prazitel. I immediately went to the pharmacy, but a surprise awaited me at home, since Vasilisa refused to take the pill. I found a solution, because on the box there was information that a suspension was also produced. That's why I bought it that same day, and it can really be conveniently sprayed into the cat's mouth. After 2 weeks, we were able to completely get rid of the parasites, and now Vasilisa feels great. I recommend the drug, it can also be used for preventive purposes!

Kirill: I have 2 cats, so I was able to test both the tablets and the suspension. The veterinarian told me that the suspension is much better, since it can be used to remove worms from the pet’s body. Tablets do not give such a good result, and therefore toxins along with parasites remain in the cat for a long time. This period of treatment will be difficult for the cat to endure. That is why I can recommend to all cat owners only the Prazitel suspension..

Indications for use

The medicine is approved for use in the treatment of helminthiasis in cats for medical reasons. To do this, laboratory tests are carried out and the pathogen is identified.

Prazitel tablets and suspension are used for the following helminthic infestations:

  • toxocariasis;
  • toxascariasis;
  • uncinariasis;
  • echinococcosis;
  • hookworm;
  • dipylidiasis;
  • trichocephalosis;
  • taeniasis;
  • diphyllobothriasis;
  • mesocestoidosis.

Prazitel helps cure helminthiases that are caused by round (nematodes) and tape (cestodes) parasitic worms. The drug is effective for combined nematodestodes infestations. Its components have a detrimental effect on helminths at different stages of development (eggs, larvae and adults - adults).

Cats should take Prazitel regularly to prevent the diseases described above.

The drug is dosed at 1 ml/10 kg of live weight quarterly or before the next vaccination. If there are a large number of worms coming out with feces, re-treatment is carried out after 10 days.

How the drug works

The mechanism of action of Prazitel is due to the presence of active substances in its composition. Praziquantel and parantel have a complex effect on helminth cells, as a result of which their muscle work and energy metabolism are disrupted. This leads to paralysis and death of the parasite, and it is subsequently eliminated from the cat’s body.

Praziquantel is absorbed through the intestinal wall and distributed to all organs and tissues, and is excreted in the urine. Pyrantel penetrates the intestinal wall only partially and is excreted mainly in the feces. The drug elimination time is 1–2 days.

Prazitel suspension

The liquid is yellow with a creamy tint and contains 0.3% praziquantel and 3% pyrantel. Auxiliary components: emulsifier, citric acid, benzyl benzoate, carboxymethylcellulose, sweetener. Packaged in glass or polymer bottles of 15; 20 ml. The 15 ml packages say that this is a drug for cats and kittens. The 20 cc packages state that this is a medicine for small dogs and puppies. Cost in August 2021 - 155 rubles.

Prazitel suspension is prescribed for dogs from 14 days of age, cats - from three weeks of age. The suspension is administered with food or forcefully into the mouth using a syringe with the needle removed. Dose 1 cm3/kg body weight. The dose can be divided into several servings.

For preventive purposes, deworming is carried out quarterly, as well as before each vaccination. If a large number of whole parasites or fragments are noticed in the pet’s feces, the treatment is repeated after 10 days.

Females should not be dewormed in the first month after mating, as well as nursing mothers during the initial 3 weeks of lactation.
