How to Remove Cat Urine Smell from a Car Seat

04/28/2016 The editors of the site zveridoma.com received a letter from our subscriber Yuri. N. from Volgograd:

Help urgently! I’m selling a car, the other day I took my cat to the dacha. This bastard described the back seat. Fairy soap, an interior cleaner, did not help. I took it to the dry cleaner, but the smell remained! Buyers are shying away, what to do?

We decided to quickly respond to Yuri’s “cry from the heart,” since selling cars is a serious matter! Here are several ways you can use to remove the smell of a naughty cat from the inside of a car, or from furniture at home. For the experiment, we found a suitable car and a couple of described corners of a sofa in a city apartment. In addition, we will describe the experience of our readers who responded to a request for help from the mailing list, for which we are especially grateful. By the way, the smell can remain not only from cats, but also from other animals, but, of course, a cat’s mark is the most difficult to get rid of.

Preventive measures

The urine of warm-blooded animals contains protein processing products. After leaving the body, these substances become a breeding ground for bacteria. This process causes an unpleasant odor and a source of infection.

To stop the appearance of puddles of urine in secluded places at home, the pet owner should pay attention to the possible causes of unwanted behavior:

  • The cat is unhappy with the tray. Perhaps the animal does not like the configuration of the tray or the owner does not bother himself too much with the timely replacement of the filler.
  • An annoying person or piece of furniture has appeared in the house. When marking territory, the cat exhibits a defensive reaction.
  • Old age or illness. If your pet did not suffer from such abnormalities as a child, you should take the cat to a veterinarian for a diagnosis.
  • Tail injury often interferes with the natural fulfillment of needs.
  • Sexual activity. An animal that is not subject to mating must be sterilized or neutered.
  • The tray is located in an inconvenient place. Cats generally prefer quiet corners away from light.
  • Not enough trays. If there are several pets, the number of toilets should be increased.
  • Increased love for cleanliness. Some cats separate litter boxes for large and small needs. Installing a second tray will help solve the problem.

To prevent problems from reoccurring after removal of contamination, it is recommended:

  1. Treat surfaces using proprietary preparations from a veterinary pharmacy.
  2. Scatter the peels of oranges or tangerines. The smell of essential oils will repel your pet.
  3. Place vials with ground pepper or coffee in the marked places, having previously drilled the lids.
  4. If the cause of the problem is heat, the pet should be sterilized.

Proven synthetic special detergents

Oddly enough, the famous “anti-odor” products and fresheners to eliminate the effects of transporting impatient animals in the car did not help. Despite prolonged ventilation. However, they worked great when combined with cleaners (for example, Profoam car interior and upholstery cleaner). First a cleaner, then an anti-pet odor agent. According to reviews, “Urinn Off” has proven itself very well (there are separate formulas for the smell of cats and dogs).

Foam for cleaning car seats really helps, which is applied to the surface, absorbed for a while, and then comes out and wiped with a cloth or brush, taking away stains and odor with it. There are quite a few brands, we won’t mention many so as not to be perceived as advertising. Two of the products we tested (on home furniture) are very effective: Gank (USA), Sonax (Germany).

Lenore fabric softener does a good job of removing cat odor, but is not very effective against stains on car seat upholstery.

What surfaces can be cleaned?

To the question of what surfaces can be cleaned, the answer is clear - everything. The above products are suitable for cleaning the following products and surfaces:

  1. Floor coverings. You can easily get rid of urine stains on the floor. The products are also effective in combating stains on parquet, laminate, linoleum, tiles, and tiles. You can even remove urine from wood or concrete.
  2. Items of clothing. First, the fabric product is washed using the means described above. And after that it needs to be washed in a washing machine. This is rational for any textile items that can be washed.
  3. Leather Products. Leather products are cleaned in the same way. Please note that you should not rub the product or use highly abrasive products.
  4. Fur. You can remove odor from fur using talc, starch or flour. You can use alcohol or vinegar solutions, which are subsequently wiped off the fur with a damp cloth, and the fur itself is dried. This method is suitable for cleaning fur coats and sheepskin coats, fur collars and muffs. A mattress that cannot be washed can be cleaned in the same way.
  5. Furniture items. All of the above products are ideal for cleaning sofas and armchairs. You need to act more carefully so as not to damage the surface. Antibacterial agents help fight odors especially well, including strong tea leaves, alcohol solution, vodka, glycerin, and mouthwash. A baby stroller is also cleaned in the same way, which, oddly enough, cats love to mark.
  6. Carpet or rug. The cleaning principle is somewhat different, although the products remain the same. In particular, you need to completely dry the carpet using dry rags or wipes. If the stain has already dried, it needs to be soaked and blotted well with napkins. Now you can use the above tools.
  7. Shoes. Initially, you need to rinse your boots or shoes with glycerin, even if they are leather or suede shoes, such as boots or boots. After this, you can use lemon juice, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide or potassium permanganate. The cleaning methods are similar for bags. The easiest way to eliminate urine odor is on fabric shoes. It is enough to wash the product in a washing machine on a suitable cycle.

Available means

At home, we used proven vinegar.
It copes with the smell of a cat with a bang, but questions arise about the advisability of using it in a car, since the smell from the vinegar itself takes a long time to dissipate, and the car interior is obviously much smaller than the room in the apartment. This remedy is probably effective for a small “lesion area.” A couple of options for the “hellish mixture” were recommended by our readers. They claim to be proven effective, but are not suitable for light-colored upholstery and will leave stains.

Option 1, for very large scale lesions

Spray the car seat with a large amount of water (it is better to unscrew it and put it under the shower), then mix pure alcohol with water 1:1 and add ammonia 1:15. Wipe the seat well with the solution, pour in the remaining residue and let it soak. Next, it is necessary to ventilate the seat (for example, on an open balcony) for at least 24 hours. We have not tried this method, so we cannot confidently declare its effectiveness.

Option 2 is more loyal

Rub the surface with laundry soap, and wipe first with a dark solution of potassium permanganate, and then with hydrogen peroxide. Of course, the method is not suitable for very light or very dark upholstery, or if the paint is not resistant to peroxide.

3 way for dark upholstery

Pour a bottle of iodine into a two-liter plastic bottle, spray the described area using a spray bottle, and wipe. Spray again and leave. Ventilate. By the way, it is suggested to use the same solution to wash the floors in an apartment where there is a persistent smell of a cat.

Yuri, we hope that our advice will help you and you will successfully and profitably sell your car!

Prevention of the problem

You shouldn’t blame your pet for a mistake. In most cases, the owner is to blame for the problem. The reasons why cats urinate in the wrong place are:

  • untimely or poor cleaning of the tray;
  • inconvenience of the toilet;
  • stress: the appearance of a new family member or a long absence of the owner;
  • marking territory as a way to attract the opposite sex.

The aroma of urine is especially strong in uncastrated individuals. There is no point in retraining a cat by poking its nose into a crime - this will have the opposite effect. It is better to check whether the tray is positioned correctly and whether its dimensions are appropriate. It should be twice the size of the pet so it can easily hide urine and excrement.

The toilet should not be placed in a crowded place. The cat will not be able to retire and relax. It is better to choose a quiet and darkened corner. If there are other animals in the house, it is worth considering that animals do not like other people's trays next to their own.

Cats may demonstratively go to the toilet past the litter box to signal that they are not feeling well . This is a way to attract the owner's attention. Old cats tend to go to the toilet in places other than the litter tray. If the pet is young, this indicates health problems.

If a guest comes to the house, it is worth considering that cats like to urinate in unfamiliar things with a foreign aroma. To avoid trouble, you need to hide your shoes in a closet.

If the tray is poorly cared for, the animal will refuse to go into it. Cats have a sensitive sense of smell, so the litter box needs to be washed periodically with detergents. By choosing a good litter for the toilet, you can forget about the puddles left by the animal. It must be environmentally friendly, safe, and absorb liquid well. You should not use scented litters - cats rarely like them.

Knowing what smells repel cats, you can forever discourage your pet from going to the toilet in the wrong place. You can apply the following scent to your pet's favorite area:

  • citrus fruits;
  • onions or garlic;
  • vinegar;
  • mint;
  • rue;
  • lavender;
  • rosemary;
  • cinnamon.

Over time, the “repellents” fade, so the smell needs to be renewed periodically.

Not the best passenger: the smell of urine in the car interior

Question from Yuri Panfilov from St. Petersburg:

“My wife and I go to the dacha by car and take the cat with us. They didn't take care of it last time, and now the cabin smells like urine. How can I get this smell out?”

We answer Yuri's question.

Transporting a cat, a dog, a drunk friend... It is always stressful for both the passenger and the driver. Only the latter will most likely have to remove the specific smell of urine in the car after a fun trip. How to do this and which means to choose can be found below.

Causes of a pungent odor

Cat urine consists of urochrome, urea and uric acid. When you try to eliminate traces of a cat’s misbehavior, only visible stains are removed, but the smell remains.

Uric acid has the property of penetrating into surfaces that absorb moisture and is not soluble in water. As humidity increases, the smell will spread with renewed vigor. Because of this, even after thorough cleaning, it is impossible to remove the smell and the unpleasant aroma returns again.

A couple of minutes and you're done: why you should choose DuftaCar

The German DuftaCar spray will help remove the smell of urine from the car seat, dashboard, upholstery and other parts of the interior. It stands out from other funds due to:

natural composition

. The active ingredients - enzymes - enter the contaminated surface and destroy the stench at the molecular level;

high efficiency

. It will take no more than three minutes to remove even persistent odors. In extreme cases, you will have to treat the area two or three times. However, this applies to cases where the smell has been absorbed into the fabric for many months;

safety for people and animals

. To work with the neutralizer you will not need gloves and a respirator. The spray does not harm the mucous membranes and skin, does not lead to irritation or allergic reactions.

To ensure the effectiveness of DuftaCar and remove the smell of urine from your car in one or two treatments, just place an order online or by phone!

How to prevent animals from marking territory?

How to prevent animals from marking territory? It's quite difficult. The animal must be weaned from its usual action. To do this, you can listen to the recommendations of experienced trainers, and also use improvised means.

Of course, the easiest way to deal with repeated territory marking by an animal is to castrate or sterilize it. It is important to take into account that even this drastic method does not help to cope with the problem in all cases. At the same time, the problem is that cleaning the places that the cat has already marked does not go away.

How to get rid of the smell of cat urine in the car interior?!

Initially I was glad that the seat was leather, urine leaked through the gap and flowed onto the rear carpet. But it's not that simple. After 30 minutes, I washed everything he had soiled with a strong bleach solution. To my surprise, this did not help at all. For the next week, I burned incense sticks in the car while I was driving. It overwhelmed the smell. But I myself was imperceptibly saturated with the smell of cat urine. Things and even skin stank. I was ashamed to go about my business. It seemed like I smelled like a homeless person. He didn’t let his wife into the front seat. And then it seemed like it didn’t stink anymore. I sniffed it and got used to it. But a two-hour drive around the city said otherwise. The smell permeated the fur coat and through it the skirt. Tough!

PS I wanted to take a photo of the process, but I forgot my camera. I had to take pictures with my phone. But he doesn’t pick up objects well in the dark.

PS Another option, lemon juice. I haven't tried it. But if I have to and use it, I’ll write about it.

Update dated January 27, 2014.

Iodine turned out to be a super effective remedy. After drying, the seat, as well as the floor in the car, give off the smell of iodine, but this is much more pleasant than the stench of cat urine. There was no trace of urine left. The smell of iodine, if it does not disappear on its own, can be removed by ordinary treatment with a washing vacuum cleaner at a car wash.

Composition of cat urine

The composition of cat urine is quite important to know. This information will help you deal more effectively with unpleasant odors. There are three main components to cat urine:

  • urea, which is a sticky component that quickly dissolves in water;
  • urochrome, which is the result of the work of bile pigments;
  • uric acid is colorless crystals that are practically insoluble in water, but glycerin, alkali or sulfuric acid (heated) will help get rid of them.

It is important to understand that most cat urine surface cleaners only combat urochrome and urea. But getting rid of acid crystals is quite difficult, and you have to use additional means.
