The kitten is growing, in photographs it looks like an adult, but in life it has just reached the age when the post-vaccination quarantine is over and the cub can be separated from its mother. Starting from 1.5 months, kittens begin the so-called phasing period, when their beautiful fur coat loses its elegant bright color and pattern, the contrast is washed out and covered with a camouflaging “patina”, like needles. Phasing begins to go away after 4 months. And it goes away completely around 6-7 months. Toyger kittens are allowed to be viewed in the nursery after the first vaccination and first quarantine, i.e. no earlier than they reach the age of 2.5 months. We ask you to understand us and have pity on our children. Because small unvaccinated kittens are susceptible to various kinds of deadly infections that can enter their home from the feet of visitors. Toyger kittens mature slowly, not early, so do not rush to pick up a small kitten from the nursery. He needs to get stronger and have time to learn a lot. Let the Toyger kitten get strong immunity and the first school of life with the support of its mother! Appearance

The Toyger is a massive cat, reaching up to twelve kilograms in weight. Large, with large bones and heavy paws, it is a real predator. The standard prescribes the following characteristics for the breed.

Head.

Elongated, heart-shaped muzzle. Rounded ears. Small, deep-set eyes with half-lowered eyelids are distinguished by rich colors. Elongated nose, widening towards the end.

Frame

Low and long body, wide neck and chest. Powerful athletic paws. A wide, downturned tail with a rounded end.

Wool

Short, plush fur with a rich golden sheen. The pattern is “relief”: dark hairs are longer than light ones. The undercoat is soft and uniform. There is no ticking.

The main feature of the toyger is a modified tabby mackerel, a rare striped color. The main background is always contrastingly different from the color of the stripes.

The pattern consists of clear and bright vertical stripes covering the entire body and paws. The tip of the tail and paws are black. Stripes also cover the face. There are white “glasses” around the eyes.

History of origin

“Toyger” (English) is not just a “tiger”, but a “toy tiger” (from the word “toy” - toy). This breed is one of the youngest. Its author and creator is felinologist Judy Sugden. Since childhood, she has been involved in breeding cats. Her mother Jean Mill (Sugden) is the author of the world famous and popular Bengal cat.

In the late 1980s, Judy worked to improve the color of marbled Bengal cats. Then she noticed that one of the cats had atypical spots on his temples. According to the breeder, this could be the key to the development of a circular pattern on the head, like a tiger. Judy wasn't wrong.

The color of the toyger is unique and is not found in any other domestic cat.

Several Bengal cats became the genetic core of the Toyger breed. In 1903, they were infused with the blood of an ordinary street cat brought from Kashmir, India. His breeding value lay in the unique stripes on his ears. Over time, other breeders joined Judy's work. In 1993, TICA began registering Toygers, and in 2007 the breed received final recognition.

Health

Toygers are long-lived breeds. Its representatives live on average 15 years, but with proper care they can live up to 18-20 years.

The “tiger cubs” have not had their own genetic diseases, but they may suffer from pathologies characteristic of Bengals.

Among them:

  • cardiomyopathy;
  • cataract;
  • cardiac hypotrophy.

Males may develop urolithiasis. It also occurs in cats, but much less frequently.

Toygers are not insured against common infectious diseases. The most common is feline leukemia. The only way to protect your pet from mortal danger is timely vaccination.

There is an opinion that if a cat does not go outside, there is no need to vaccinate it. This is wrong. Most pathogens that cause life-threatening diseases remain active in the environment. Owners can bring them home, for example, on shoes or dirty hands.

The vaccination schedule is drawn up by a veterinarian, based on data received from the breeder and the general health of the pet.

Most often they follow the following scheme:

  • 8-12 weeks – first vaccination;
  • after 2-3 weeks - revaccination;
  • at 12 months – the third vaccination.

Further vaccination is carried out annually. At least 10 days before the procedure, the animal must be dewormed and free of fleas. The breeder will tell you what medications to use.

Character

Despite their “wild” appearance, these are very gentle and affectionate cats. They love the company of people and get along well with both adults and small children. They are not whimsical and feel great both in the space of a standard apartment and in a spacious house. Toygers have a calm disposition, of course, they are not averse to playing, but in general, they are balanced and leisurely animals. Toygers love to communicate; the range of sounds produced by these beauties is great, from soft purrs and loud meows to nightingale trills. The friendliness of these cats helps them find a common language with all the inhabitants of the house, including other pets with whom they often play and have fun.

Contents in the house

Pets of this breed are unpretentious and do not have any peculiarities in their maintenance. A plush coat does not require constant brushing; you should not bathe your cat more than twice a month.

Little tigers, like any true predator, need to use their growing claws. It is necessary to monitor their condition and also purchase a scratching post.

The toyger needs standard “cat procedures” - cleaning the ears, eyes, teeth.

This breed requires a thoughtful and balanced diet. Toygers are indiscriminate eaters and eat whatever their owner gives them. This often leads to digestive problems and a shortened lifespan of the animal. When choosing ready-made mixtures, you should give preference to premium food, developed taking into account the age and needs of the pet.

However, if the breeder prefers to feed the pet natural food, then you should know some nuances. The cat's diet is predominantly protein, the main food being meat, poultry, and offal. Be sure to add vegetables and cereals. Fish is not recommended for consumption. Vitamin supplements, chosen in consultation with your veterinarian, will improve your pet's health.

No genetic diseases have been identified at the moment; toygers are strong and healthy cats and rarely get sick. With proper nutrition and healthy complementary foods, there will be no problems. However, an unbalanced diet often leads to obesity, and cats have problems with the urinary tract.
