Breed selection:

Any cat owner will tell you that every cat is different.
So why do some people think cats are the same? Cats have their own personalities and quirks. There is no doubt that the interactions between each animal and its owner are also different, and are a result of the compatibility of their personalities and lifestyles. However, many cats have directly inherited their behavior from their genetic ancestors. Some cat breeds have their own individual characteristics that require a certain lifestyle or, in extreme cases, understanding on the part of the owner. If you are determined to take a kitten into your home, you must take into account not only your personal characteristics and your lifestyle, but also the characteristics of the breed you want to adopt. Every owner knows that their cat will meow and may “talk” a little. But some cat breeds, such as Korat, Burmese and Siamese, are known for their vocal abilities. They are famous for having the longest and loudest conversations with their loved ones. If you live in an apartment with thin walls and have picky neighbors, then it is advisable to consider purchasing a cat of a quieter breed, such as an American Curl, Somali, or Scottish Fold.

Some energetic cats are able to entertain themselves and others for hours on end. The energy of such breeds as the Devon Rex, the Canadian Sphynx, the Balinese and the British Angora is very high, they are mischievous and curious creatures. It is worth considering purchasing these breeds for individuals who are confined indoors for long periods of time, the elderly and people with limited mobility, as these cats provide an excellent source of companionship and entertainment.

A kitten’s long hair, of course, looks very beautiful on a baby, but with age, the question of caring for the fur will still arise, and here you need to take into account the inevitable additional costs of cutting and whether you have free time for this. Lack of proper care can lead to loss of shine and matting of the coat. In addition, your things will always be stained with pet hair. Shaving is a last resort to solve this problem, and the procedure can be very traumatic. Some cats need to be given a sedative before being groomed. If you don't have enough time or money for regular grooming, try to avoid breeds such as the Maine Coon and Ragdoll. Affectionate and friendly cats of breeds such as Maine Coon, Tonkinese, Abyssinian and Persian are attention-seeking, making them very desirable in families with small children. Breeds that are known to be a little more aloof, especially with strangers, are the Russian Shorthair, Norwegian Forest Cat, and Nibelung. If you want your cat to communicate without conflict with other animals living with you, for example with a puppy or dog, it is best to purchase American Shorthair, Japanese Bobtail or Tonkinese cats.

Some domestic cat breeds, due to excessive reproduction, are more susceptible to diseases. This becomes expensive if the cat needs treatment for diseases such as joint inflammation, cancer, viral immunodeficiency, Feline Leukemia Virus (FLV), panleukopenia, (FIV) or Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). Breeds that have been identified by veterinary organizations include, but are not limited to, Persians and Scottish Folds.

Allergens are found in cats' saliva and also in their sebaceous glands. During the breeding season, cats emit allergens at considerable distances from themselves. The concept of true hypoallergenic cats does not exist, but the Rex breed has fewer of them than others.

Breeds like the Devon Rex or Korat are very affectionate and require a lot of love from their owners. These two breeds may even show signs of depression if left unattended for long periods of time. Some breeds are unpretentious, including the Russian Blue, Exotic Shorthair, Maine, Burmese and Scottish Fold.

Don Sphynx - an alien and a cat dog

The Don Sphynx, or Russian hairless cat, is a very interesting breed that domestic cat lovers can rightfully be proud of.

History of the breed.

Hairless cats have existed for several thousand years and throughout their history they have constantly caused a storm of emotions in people who see them for the first time: from admiration to misunderstanding. However, the Don Sphynx is a rather young breed of cat. As the name suggests, this breed appeared in my hometown of Rostov-on-Don, back in 1986. The first cat was found by chance by Elena Kovaleva and named Varvara. The found kitten soon lost all its fur, but the veterinarians who examined it did not find any abnormalities in the animal’s health. Three years later, Varvara was crossed with a European Shorthair cat. Kittens from this litter are considered the founders of a new breed, the development of which was subsequently taken up by the famous felinologist Irina Nemykina. In 1996, the Don Sphinx received official recognition and very soon became popular not only in Russia, but also in many countries of the world.

Exterior and breed standards.

The Don Sphynx is a very elegant and graceful medium-sized cat in appearance. If we compare Donchak with other varieties of Sphinxes, then its bones are stronger and denser, its paws are shorter, and its ears are wider and wider set. One of the distinctive features of the appearance of the Russian Hairless cat is the excess skin that forms picturesque folds on the muscular body of the animal. The Don Sphinxes have beautiful almond-shaped eyes, giving their gaze an extraordinary mystery. It’s not for nothing that many consider these cats to be aliens from other planets! As for the coat, depending on its type, there are three varieties of the Don Sphynx: naked (having no hair from birth and also called rubber bands), velor “flock” (the skin feels like velvet, and there is short fur on the paws and tail) , “brushes” (can have soft wavy fur or hard fur that feels like bristles). Representatives of the latter type sometimes begin to lose hair with age and become hairless. At the same time, they only have remnants of fur on their paws.

Features of the care and health of the Don Sphinx.

Due to the lack of fur in representatives of the breed, the requirements for their maintenance acquire some features that differ from the maintenance of short-haired or long-haired cats. Thus, the need for combing is completely eliminated. You can also do without bathing; just replace it with wiping with a damp towel or special wet wipes. However, due to the absence of eyelashes in the animal, mucus periodically accumulates in the eye conjunctival sacs, which must be regularly removed with a cotton swab. In addition, you must always keep your pet warm, in winter, close to the radiator. Warm clothing for your pet is also a good idea. It is recommended to feed the Sphinx with properly selected special food of at least super premium class, in order to avoid problems with delicate skin and overall health. Cats rarely go into heat, cats rarely mark, and kittens of this breed quickly learn to use the litter box. The health of cats does not cause problems with proper care and maintenance; the Sphinx will delight you for an average of 12-14 years. Make sure there are no drafts in the house; Sphinxes can easily catch a cold. These cats are not for outdoor use, but only for indoor or apartment use.

Character of the Don Sphinx.

The character of the Don Sphinx deserves special attention, because these creatures are very sociable, loyal, affectionate and easy-going animals. In addition, they are not characterized by the usual cat “selfishness”. In their behavior, Russian Hairless cats resemble dogs: they are very loyal and obedient. Representatives of this breed will easily find a common language with all family members, young and old, and with other pets in your home. Also, Don Sphinxes usually become very attached to their owner and remain faithful to him until the end of their lives. Another undeniable advantage of this breed is that people are very rarely allergic to its representatives. Therefore, even if you suffer from an allergy to animal fur, most likely, the Don Sphynx will not cause you such problems.

The Don Sphynx is an unusual, graceful, unique breed of cat. You may love or not love such cats, this is your right, but such a cat will not leave anyone indifferent.

Abyssinian

The most loyal cat breed to humans and as loyal as a dog is the Abyssinian cat. Like dogs, Abyssinians have a strong attachment to their owner. They are ready to accompany him everywhere, to participate in all matters. Active, intelligent and inquisitive cats are friendly and playful.

Animals are excellent swimmers and love to bathe in bathtubs and open bodies of water. They easily get accustomed to a leash and harness, carry toys in their teeth and serve them to the owner. This is the best choice for those who are used to dealing with dogs.

Peculiarities

Abyssinians need more human attention than other cat breeds. When alone, pets become depressed and can get sick.
