Grandin cat food: customer reviews and composition analysis

Formulation and nutritional content

We analyze the composition of the feed mixture using the example of food for kittens and pregnant females:

Composition of Grandin feed

Meat and fish ingredients come first. A variety of foods ensures that the protein is balanced in amino acids. Chicken and salmon fat are more suitable for the cat's body than vegetable oils.

The manufacturer has prepared grain-free food for kittens and pregnant females. Cats need small amounts of carbohydrates. Therefore, starch comes from potatoes and green peas. The latter is a source of dietary fiber. Beet pulp (dry pulp) is a sorbent that absorbs and retains excess moisture. Apples contain antioxidants and pectin, which are absorbed by beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. Whey (apparently milk whey) is also added to the feed mixture. It contains lactose, which is only accessible to the enzymes of beneficial bacteria. Two types of yeast were included in the feed. These are sources of B vitamins, as well as immunomodulators.

The plant complex contains natural antiseptics, preservatives, dietary fiber, and biologically active substances. Chicory rhizome is included in all premium and holistic feeds as a reservoir of Inulin, a prebiotic that nourishes microflora. Yucca has the ability to partially absorb unpleasant odors emanating from cat excrement.

The feed mixture included rosemary extract, Taurine, DL-methionine, antioxidants, and preservatives. Perhaps this is why consumers consider Grandin food not a holistic product, but a super-premium product. The energy value of the feed is high – 4306 kcal/kg due to the large amount of fat – 22%. A high level of protein (38%) ensures intensive growth, embryo development, and abundant lactation.

Feed overview

Grandin food for cats belongs to the super-premium class. The manufacturer also positions this food as holistic. Experts recommend it as the main diet for pets. It is enough to choose the appropriate food, taking into account the pet’s age and weight. You can also read our review of Grandin dog food.

How to buy Grandin food and how much it will cost

For now, you can only purchase the holistic product from the Four Paws chain of pet stores. The average cost for 400 g of dry food is 360 rubles, 1.5 kg - at least 1150 rubles.

Cat food "Grandin" has not yet become widespread on the Russian market, since it went on sale relatively recently. However, veterinarians note the excellent quality of production and balanced composition, which provides the animal’s body with all the necessary elements for normal life. Perhaps the biggest drawback is the high cost.

Review

Gourmet cat food is wet food in a variety of packages. An analogue in purpose and appearance can be called Sheba from the Mars company. That is, Gourmets are positioned as very tasty diets prepared according to the best recipes. They also contain animal proteins, cereals (most often rice, corn), and supplements with vitamins and mineral complexes. Gurme has several episodes in total:

  1. Mont Petit - small portioned bags;
  2. Gold - a collection of ideal taste qualities in delicate pieces;
  3. Pearl - the softest pieces with sauce;
  4. A la Carte - assorted meat or fish combined with other products.

Before release, the manufacturing company is preparing a unique restaurant menu for cats. For example, in one of the diets there are meatballs and pasta, in the other there are pates with aromatic and nutritious filling. The flavors and main ingredients of Gourmet cat food are as follows:

  • fish (salmon, tuna, trout);
  • poultry (chicken, duck, turkey);
  • rabbit;
  • liver;
  • lamb;
  • beef.

Also in the description you can see vegetables and herbs: spinach, carrots, tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, green beans and others. There are also dyes, natural and artificial preservatives, but in small quantities, like sugars contained in fruits.

Gourmet comes only wet - stew, pate with additives. It is produced in two forms:

  1. jars with a convenient key for opening;
  2. pouches - soft and flat bags.

Compound

composition of gourmet food
The weight of pieces in sauce or Gourmet pate in round jars is 85 g, in pouches - 85 g and 50 g. The feeding rate for an adult animal weighing about 4 kg is 350 g (4 large bags). For comparison: super-premium dry granules are calculated at 50-80 g per day for an individual over 1 year old.

Important: After opening, you can store wet Gourmet for 24 hours in the refrigerator, then it will spoil and become unfit for consumption. The daily norm is divided into several servings; it is optimal to give food to cats 3-4 times a day.

Advantages and disadvantages

It is difficult to classify Gourmet cat food into any class, since it is difficult to determine the percentage of animal proteins and natural meat in its composition. It can be assumed that some of the series are premium.

There are few grains in it, as well as other fillers that are added for nutrition and volume in inexpensive products. This food is positioned as a complete replacement for natural nutrition.

Important: Gourmet cannot rely on flavors and match them with the predominant ingredients. For example: fish stew contains more meat products than trout and tuna.

Minuses

In addition to the insufficiently transparent description of the products in Gourmet cat food, additional disadvantages are noted:

  • no separate episodes;
  • no dry granules;
  • only small packages;
  • the presence of preservatives, sugars and dyes;
  • high consumption.

Gourmet is suitable only for adult cats without any health problems. It is advisable to supplement soft food with solid products (special treats from the same manufacturer or beef cartilage, chicken throats or paws without claws) to prevent plaque and tartar from appearing. Therefore, in practice, Gourmet cannot be called a complete diet.

pros

This line has positive qualities. It contains a minimum set of useful and nutritious substances to support the normal functioning of a cat, a minimum of grains and a predominance of meat - this is a good parameter. Other advantages of Gourmet:

  • gram is designed for 1-2 servings;
  • a lot of flavors and their combinations;
  • various forms;
  • interesting fillers;
  • contains vegetables;
  • includes minerals and vitamins;
  • available in many stores.

Among the entire assortment, it is easy to choose the diet that your pet will like most. However, if you are allergic to beef or chicken, you need to take into account the meat contents that are in each pack.

Pate or fried slices with processed vegetables really resemble human food from a real restaurant, and cats like this best, especially when they are old.

Advantages and disadvantages

Despite the fact that the company entered the market not so long ago, buyers have already managed to evaluate Organix products.

The advantages of Organix brand food include:

  • price. The products belong to the premium line of animal nutrition, but their cost is comparable to middle-class food;
  • availability. The products are sold in many well-known supermarkets and all pet stores in the country;
  • compound. Most of the composition is organic. The vitamins and minerals contained in the food can improve the well-being and health of your pet;
  • diversity. The Organix product line includes a wide range of products consisting of dry and wet diets;
  • tastes. Both canned and dry pads taste the same. This allows you to alternate different types of feed with each other;
  • calorie content. A large number of nutritious ingredients make the food quite high in calories. Thanks to this, the cat gets satisfied faster with less food.

Correctly selected ingredients of the composition have a positive effect on the functioning of the digestive system. The pet's gastrointestinal problems disappear and constipation or diarrhea rarely occurs. The consistency of stool returns to normal over time.

The disadvantages of Organics brand feed include:

  • Only one line has been developed for kittens;
  • On the packaging of canned food, the manufacturer did not indicate what percentage of meat content is present in the composition;
  • wet diets contain additive “E”;
  • The product line does not contain products intended for neutered or elderly cats. There is also no food available for pregnant cats.

Note! Many buyers are unhappy with the quality of the packaging. When opening canned food, the ring breaks off or bends

In addition, another inconvenience is that large bags of food do not have handles. This causes discomfort during transportation.

Organics brand products were highly appreciated by buyers and veterinarians

Treats

The Mnyams brand produces a variety of treats for cats:

  1. Traditional delicacies. They are produced in the form of sticks and pieces based on animal meat, poultry and fish.
  2. Moist creamy treat. It contains chicken, tuna and scallop.
  3. Vitamin treats. This product is designed to strengthen the body, remove hair and prevent diseases. Treats with vitamins and microelements are produced in the form of drops and crispy pillows.

Treats are not intended for constant nutrition. Their share in the diet should be no more than 10%. Sticks, cream and pads can be added to dry food, canned food and pouches.

Conclusions about Grandin food

What conclusions can be drawn about Grandin food? The first aspect is quality, which satisfies all the needs of healthy dogs. The second important issue is cost.

The monthly cost of the diet directly depends on the size of the dog, but it must be taken into account that it is not advisable to feed your pet only dry or wet food.

For puppies up to 4 months, only canned food is suitable; up to 6–7 months (complete change of teeth), canned food can be mixed with soaked wet food. To prevent dental and oral diseases, the diet of an adult dog should consist of 75% wet and 25% dry food.

Bottom line: Grandin food is well balanced and fortified. The products can be used for daily feeding of adult dogs and puppies that are not prone to allergies.

Flaws

Unfortunately, this type of feed is not without its drawbacks. The disadvantages of the product include the presence of a small amount of pesticides in it. This is due to the fact that plant raw materials are used in the production of food. The manufacturer assures that these substances are contained in very small quantities and cannot cause harm to health. However, cats prone to allergies and stomach upsets should not be given this food.

There are no medicinal foods in the Mnyams line. Many cat owners also consider this a disadvantage of this brand. The product is intended only for animals in good health. Special types of food are represented only by food for pregnant and lactating cats. Some types of dry and wet products are recommended for feeding sterilized animals.

Mnyams food is not yet widely used. Some of its varieties are rarely found on sale. They have to be ordered in pet stores or online in advance.

Prices

In fact, the brand belongs to the same owner as the 4 Paws pet store chain, so you can buy Grandin food mainly in the stores of this chain. The price varies depending on the volume of packaging:

  • 400 g - from 359 rub.
  • 1.5 kg - from 1149 rub.
  • 10 kg - from 5499 kg.
  • Canned food (70 g) and pouches (85 g) - from 80 rubles.

Range

The manufacturer offers dry complete food for cats and cats, which can be supplemented with wet pouches or canned food if desired. The variety of assortment allows you to choose food for your pet, taking into account age and physiological characteristics. But Grandin’s assortment does not include medicinal, dietary or other special diets.

Dry diets

The production of Grandin dry food is based in the Czech Republic. Here we produce complete products designed for cats and kittens depending on age:

  1. Kitten with chicken for kittens (up to 12 months), pregnant and lactating cats.
  2. Sterilized with chicken for sterilized cats and neutered cats.
  3. Adult with beef for adult animals (1-7 years).
  4. Indoor with lamb for pets (1-7 years).
  5. Senior with lamb and rabbit for animals over 7 years old.

Each of the presented products is available in three packaging options: 400 g, 1.5 kg and 10 kg. Thanks to a convenient clasp, the packaging is hermetically sealed, so the product is not exposed to air and does not spread odors in the storage area.

Canned food

The production of Grandin canned food is located in Germany. The line includes 4 canned food options recommended for feeding adult animals

  1. Chicken fillet.
  2. Turkey fillet with tuna.
  3. Chicken fillet with tuna.
  4. Chicken fillet with shrimp.

Canned food contains 55% meat ingredients and is available in 70 g cans. The manufacturer recommends using them as a supplement to the main diet of animals.

In addition, wet diets are presented in packs of 85 g. Each of them is a monoprotein product based on one source of meat:

  • For kittens with chicken.
  • For adult animals with chicken or veal.
  • For sterilized animals with turkey or lamb.
  • For animals over 7 years old with beef.

general information

The Grandin brand produces two types of wet food: in bags and in cans. The manufacturer classifies these products as “holistic” - this is indicated on the front side of the package. You should not focus on this characteristic, because there are no official standards that would strictly determine the status of the product; this is nothing more than a marketing ploy. We prefer to judge the quality of food based on the composition of the product - we will analyze the composition indicated on the official website of the brand.

Feed composition

The contents of different types of nutritional mixtures are slightly different.

Dry

Let's look at the example of the “Cataplana in Portuguese” packaging:

  • Protein. Provided by poultry. The packaging says 18%, but remember that during processing most of the volume is lost, so about 5% remains. Other sources include flour from various types of fish and meat, egg and potato powder.
  • Carbohydrates. Millet and rice are used.
  • Fats. Animals and fish included.
  • Cellulose. Flaxseed, beet pulp, cellulose, dried flowers and berries.
  • Brewer's yeast;
  • salt;
  • mussel and chicory powders;
  • yucca extract;
  • additives.

Pauchi

The contents of the package of this type of product are described more concisely by the manufacturer.

The composition of one of the most popular products, Kitten & Junior, is given:

  • meat and offal - 25% poultry and 6% pork;
  • fats and oils (0.2% is fish);
  • herbal ingredients;
  • Sahara;
  • minerals;
  • vitamin and chemical supplements.

Canned food

The composition of a can of tuna in jelly has been analyzed:

  • about 46% of which comes from tuna and almost 18.5% from mackerel;
  • rice as a source of carbohydrates;
  • water and jelly forming component.

Canned food Grandin

A distinctive feature of these products is the content of meat ingredients - 55%. The manufacturer also explains that this food does not contain dyes, flavors or preservatives. There are only 4 varieties in the line with different tastes, and all of them are intended for adult cats. The list of components is quite laconic:

  • chicken meat (55%);
  • turkey meat (50%), tuna (5%);
  • chicken meat (50%), tuna (5%);
  • chicken meat (50%), shrimp (5%).

So, the first thing that can be noted is that the name of the ingredients tells us that exactly meat was used in this food, that is, muscle fibers, most likely, without bones and other by-products.

Turkey and chicken are excellent foods for cats, as poultry is part of a cat's natural diet in the wild. However, the manufacturer did not indicate in what form the meat was added to the feed. Since the website indicates “meat fiber” in the name of the food, we conclude that this is raw meat, probably pre-deep frozen - otherwise it would be indicated that the meat is fresh. The difference between chicken and chicken is not entirely clear; usually these ingredients mean the same thing, but the manufacturer found it necessary to separate these two types of meat products.

Tuna and shrimp in this case do not have any significant effect on the content of animal protein in the feed, since they constitute only 5% of the total share of the feed. They probably act as a natural flavoring additive.

And the composition seems worthy at first glance, but we have a reasonable question: if they described to us what 55% of the food consists of, then what makes up the remaining 45%? Is it water or is it meat juice released during cooking, maybe sauce or jelly? The manufacturer does not provide any information about this. It’s somehow not very interesting to buy food, almost half of the components of which are hidden under the veil of trade secrets.

Only vitamin E in the amount of 50 mg is indicated as additives, but the manufacturer does not hide the fact that the product is only an addition to the basic diet. Guaranteed product analysis tells us the same thing:

  • protein 10-12%;
  • fat 0.8-1.2%;
  • raw ash 0.7-1.5%;
  • crude fiber 0.3-1.5%;
  • moisture 84%.

Our verdict

In general, canned food is quite good, but we find the statement about the increased meat content to be somewhat advertising; we have also seen more meat-based food. In addition, almost half of the feed composition remains unknown. Most likely, the unknown part is its own juice. And this is again a reason to think about whether it is worth paying for 100% of the product, but receiving only 55%.

Canned food is sold in jars with a key, packaged in 70 g, the price on the 4 Paws website is 80 rubles. For comparison, Grandorf canned food in similar packaging contains 75% fresh (not frozen) meat products and 25% of its own juice (that is, this unit is listed in the composition), and costs only 10 rubles more.

Who produces Grandorf food?

Certificates from these international organizations have been obtained

Feed cost and sales points

The average cost is 450–500 rubles. for 300 g, 2000–2500 rub. for 1.8 kg and 4000–4500 rub. for 5.4 kg. Additionally, there is a large package (17 kg) for Orijen Cat & Kitten food, but finding it on sale is problematic. The average cost of 1 kg is 700–1000 rubles. On the Russian-language version of the manufacturer’s website there is a map that shows stores selling Orijen dry food, but they are not present in every city. In some cases, it is easier to purchase products online.
