Why do cats respond to kitty-kiss and how else do they call cats?

Why do cats run when called as soon as they hear “kitty-kitty”? Do they respond to the owner’s voice, or is there really something in this combination of sounds that attracts the furry pet? Scientists do not answer this question, but it is known that high-frequency sounds are more attractive, so even a simple “ssss” sound can lure the Russian Barsik. Different countries have different ways of calling a cat.

Hunter's Instinct

According to one version, the hissing sound that a person makes when pronouncing “kiss-kiss” attracts a cat with its similarity to the “conversation” of mice. Therefore, the furry hunter immediately remembers his natural instincts, even if he has never gone outside, and runs after his prey.

This sound also resembles the rustling of leaves, the hissing of another cat. Most often, cats turn around with interest when they hear hissing sounds. Although some owners note that the cat ignores “ks-ks-ks” and responds only to its own name or command. This is one of the reasons why the hissing version is not considered fully proven.

Habit

In fact, cats have been accustomed to responding to “kitty-kitty” for a long time. The people themselves contributed to this. As you know, all the most stable habits are formed in childhood, kittens are no exception.

Kittens get used to such treatment from childhood.

Since childhood, they hear the notorious “kitty-kitty”, and then receive hugs, affection or something tasty. This is why cats respond to such calls even as adults. If you do not train your pet to do this, it is unlikely that he will run to such a cry. And even more so if he regularly received negative emotions after such a call. The same is true with other animals.

So what's the deal?

Different countries have their own way to call a cat:

  1. Americans have kitty-kitty (although we hear kiri-kiri).
  2. In Israel - smack-smack.
  3. In the Czech Republic - chi-chi.
  4. In France, it's a big deal.
  5. In India they make sounds similar to the natural “meow”.
  6. In Italy - michu-michu.
  7. In Holland - go ahead.
  8. In Korea - nabiya-nabiya.
  9. In Serbia - mats-mats.

This proves that the call to which a cat will run is a habit that begins in its childhood. Until the kitten has learned to distinguish its name, its positive emotions are associated with those sounds that precede a treat, affection or communication with the owner. The mother cat responds to the same sound and the baby sees that this is correct and repeats after her.

But if, from birth, you call a furry baby only by name, then, as an adult, the combination of “kiss-kiss” sounds will not interest him, and he will approach only after hearing the familiar “Murka” or any other name given by the owner.

How do cats perceive sounds?

Cats have well-developed hearing. They are able to distinguish many more sounds than humans. The hearing organ consists of three sections: the outer, middle and inner ear. The resulting impulses are sent to the hearing center located in the brain.

A characteristic feature of animals is directional hearing. The ear “sorts” all surrounding noise. Surely cat owners have noticed how actively they move their ears. Moreover, the ears can turn in different directions independently of each other. Thus, the animal reacts to two sounds simultaneously. The flexibility of the auricle is ensured by a large group of muscles, due to which it rotates almost 180 degrees.

A cat's ear contains about 52,000 nerve endings that detect sounds.
Sensitive hearing allows the cat to navigate in space even with its eyes closed or in complete darkness. It recognizes the strength, height, and removal of sound and, based on this information, clearly understands where exactly the noise source is located. Interesting fact : cats cannot produce ultrasound, since they do not have the corresponding organ, but they hear it clearly. The range of frequencies perceived by cats varies from 45 Hz to 64,000 Hz (according to some sources, up to 100,000 Hz). This skill is used by animals during hunting.

What are cats called in different countries?

In Russia, the most common names are Murka, Kuzya, Barsik. Such nicknames are most often given to outbred cats, as well as in villages. City thoroughbred pets usually receive complex and unusual names.

Fact! It is easier for a cat to remember a nickname if it is short, no more than 2-3 syllables. If you can add a hissing sound to it, the pet will certainly respond to the name given to it.

Persian cats are often called Perseus, Peach, Siamese cats are called Siam, Sin. Maine Coons are called by the majestic names Zeus and Caesar. Sometimes they give funny nicknames - Sausage, Sweetie, Toffee. Among foreign names, the most common are Charlie, Alice, Jack, Max. Some owners are guided by the color of their furry friend - Gray, Ginger, Turtle.

Americans prefer to call cats Max, Tiger, Smokey, Oliver, Sammy, Oscar, Milo, Buster. Cats in America are named Molly, Lucy, Bella, Cleo, Kitty.

The English will name the cat Augusta, Beatrice or Wendy, and the cat Vincent, Gary or Chris.

Interesting! John Travolta named the cat Barry, and Bill Clinton named it Sox. Nicolas Cage chose the nickname Lewis. Armen Dzhigarkhanyan named his furry friend Filisof, and Anastasia Volochkova - Georges.

The Japanese will name the cat Aiko, which means beloved, Akira - bright, Asa - dawn, Mai - dance, Ren - lotus, Haru - spring.

Affectionate words help strengthen the union of loving people, psychologists are convinced. On the eve of the Day of Family, Love and Loyalty celebrated on July 8, the Research Center of the recruiting portal Superjob.ru decided to ask Russians what affectionate nicknames they come up with for their spouses and lovers.

Judging by the respondents' answers, the most popular affectionate nickname among our compatriots is bunny. 14% of the stronger sex and every fifth lady (20%) regularly hear it from their lovers, but not all of them like it: “Bunny. Terribly annoying!”

Diminutive derivatives from names are used when addressing their loved ones by 13% of women and 10% of men. As some ladies assure, it is this form of address that gives them confidence that their lover does not confuse them with his former passions: “For me, “bunnies”, “suns” and others like them are unacceptable... I want to be sure that I am the only one! »

Another popular term of endearment for men is “cat”; for women, respectively, “kitty”. Women use it slightly less often than men (12% versus 14%). Addresses such as “beloved” and “beloved” are used by 6% of women and men each in conversations with their other half.

5% of the stronger sex and 8% of ladies call their spouses and lovers “sunshine”. "Baby!" - 2% of women and 7% of men begin their dialogue with their other halves with this word. “Dear”, “sweetheart” - this is how 3% of women and 2% of men address their life partners. 2% of study participants call their loved ones “babies,” another 2% of women affectionately address their betrotheds: “Darling!”, and 2% of men call their wives and girlfriends “sweethearts.”

Other affectionate nicknames, including “darling”, “joy”, “bear cub” and many others, were invented by 22% of women and 23% of men for their other halves. Women are awarded flattering epithets “princess” and “beauty”. Men have funny nicknames: “hippopotamus”, “goat”, “Murzik”. Those with curvy figures are called “buns”. In families with children, spouses often address each other as “Mommy” and “Daddy.”

But 4% of male respondents and 2% of women claim that they have never heard affectionate addresses from their other half. Someone considers such behavior to be unnecessary baby talk: “No way, I think it’s stupid.” However, often the absence of affectionate words in everyday communication indicates a discord in the relationship: “She doesn’t know such words”; “He doesn’t even call me by name, and he doesn’t even think about affectionate treatment.”

15% of men and 4% of women found it difficult or did not want to answer the proposed question: “Secret!”; “This is very personal!”

Location of the survey: Russia, all districts Populated areas: 168 Time: July 2-4, 2012 Population studied: men and women over 18 years of age, married or in a romantic relationship Sample size: 2000 respondents

Question: “What kind of term of endearment does your other half most often call you?”

The respondents' answers were distributed as follows:

Instructions for using cats

« - So, Greg. Why don't you like cats? — I don’t “don’t like cats.” I'm just more of a dog person. I prefer dogs. I love the way they wag their tail when they see you... - Do you need adoration? And that's why you prefer emotionally limited creatures? - I... - You see, Greg: you just have to shout at the dog, and he will lower his tail to the bottom, covering his genitals with it, and press his ears. Cats are not as corrupt as dogs; they force everyone to work for themselves. Dog too easy

tame.
Gaining trust
is much more difficult - it is long and painstaking work.

Busy!

Freya literally rides cats

  • Only rude, uncouth people can find sadistic pleasure in grabbing Cats by the scruff of the neck and dragging them back and forth. Cats are supposed to be picked up with both hands under their soft, plump belly and carried around the apartment, affectionately calling them “nasty animals,” “nasty little animals,” or “good cats.”
  • Young, not yet heavy Cats can be launched. The Cat is launched by accelerating the Cat in the horizontal direction approximately a meter above the bed. Launched, the Cat flies for some time, spreading its legs like a flying squirrel, after which it lands with a soft sound, springing beautifully and immediately rushing to run away in horror. An escaped Cat can be easily lured back by starting to make rustling or scratching sounds. Hearing such sounds, the Cat immediately returns back in the hope of catching the mouse. The Cat deceived in this way can be immediately launched again.
  • In Savet times, it was also practiced to launch parachute cats from the roofs of houses, but very often they were blown onto balconies and windows of houses.
  • When in a bad mood, the Cat can hit you with its paw. Some improperly raised cats will release their claws and scratch. A well-trained cat is afraid to go out into the middle of the room and never lets out its claws against its owners and paws very pleasantly with its soft paw. Having become completely angry, the Cat presses his ears to his head and waves his paw with all his might, which is very funny. It's more expensive to anger true cats.
  • As a means of transportation: if you have a cat larger than yourself, one animal is enough. Otherwise, a larger number of baleen are needed. A simpler way (or more complicated, depending on how you look at it): become a goddess like Freya, who rode around in a chariot with two white cats harnessed to it. Pathetic!
  • Guard cat.
  • Never leave

  • In the harsh Siberian winters, cats can be used as mobile heaters by placing a feline on your chest or blanket to keep them warm.
  • There is a belief that a cat with parquet flooring tied to its back cannot turn and can only walk in a straight line.
  • Another belief says that if you cut off all of a cat’s whiskers, he will walk around the house and poke into all the objects, unable to adequately assess the distance to them. In fact, with the help of whiskers, cats detect air movement in the room, and without them they feel extremely insecure, especially in the dark.
  • Many owners, in a fit of tenderness, can completely irrationally call their cats bunnies, fish, cats, bear-bears and other inappropriate feline animals.
  • A large collection of rules for the correct use of cats in everyday life is available in the very Orthodox book of the racial British writer Terry Pratchett, “Cat No Fools.”

Let the kitten get used to the name

Never mention your kitten's name when yelling at it. The nickname should evoke pleasant emotions in the child - this is the only way the kitten will want to come to the call.

All about Gourmet cat food

Say the nickname while playing to create another positive image in your cat's mind. Talk to your kitten as often as possible.

Always give a treat when the kitten calls. This way the child will not feel betrayed.

Kittens get used to their name within a week or two. Adult cats take a little longer.

Have you ever wondered why we call a cat a “pussy cat” and they run when called? Does this sound remind them of a mouse squeaking? Or maybe the reason... Why cats react to “kitten-kitten”
