Himalayan cat

Among the vast diversity of the cat kingdom, some are ancient, significant and mysterious. Thai cats are one of these. Their amazing eye color, according to legend, is a gift from the gods for their devotion to their owners and fidelity. In the stories of Thai cats, there are stories that they are possessed by the souls of deceased owners. Therefore, for a long time, taking a cat outside the state was strictly prohibited.

Most people looking at her today will say that she is Siamese, but her loving owners are sure that she is Thai, why?! To do this, we will have to make a short excursion into history. Let's take a trip to the end of the 19th century, to 1884. It was then that the British Vice-Consul Edward Goad first brought two cats from Bangkok to England. They were dubbed Siamese, which was the name of the kingdom where the animals were brought from.

Main characteristics of Thai breed cats

The Thai cat lives on average 14-15 years, but often lives up to 20. It is no coincidence that he is a long-livers. Animals weigh on average 4-8 kilograms and reach a height of 30 cm.

While the breed is considered open, that is, the standards are being revised. So a cat similar to a Thai cat may well be classified as a breed and allowed for breeding if there are documents signed by two experts.

The head of the Thai cat is rounded, with a well-defined muzzle, on which rounded cheeks are visible.

The eyes are sky-colored, slightly slanted. The richer the color, the higher the value of the animal.

The ears are slightly rounded, located at a large distance from each other.

The body is dense and muscular, the neck is short.

The tail is not too long, slightly pointed.

Since the cat was brought from warm regions, its coat is not short, thin and smooth without undercoat.

Usually the animal is white in color, and the muzzle of the paw and tail are dark. Dark spots on other areas may disqualify the animal. The main colors are seal point, blue point, chocolate point, red point, tortie point, tabby point, lilac point, cream point.

Thais are very smart and at the same time friendly animals. One of their advantages and at the same time disadvantages is curiosity. Sometimes it can end tragically, as animals, exploring the world, can climb onto a hot stove or jump out of a window.

Cats communicate very well with people and are ready to take part in all their affairs. If changes occur in the house, the cat immediately reacts to them and rushes to inform the owner.

Representatives of the Thai breed love to talk. In addition to purring and meowing, you can hear many different sounds from them. They quickly find a “common language” with adults and children. For kids, pets are even ready to act as nannies.

Don Sphynx

The Don Sphynx is a hairless cat breed that began its history in 1986, when a woman named Elena Kovaleva saved a small kitten from death that was losing its fur on its back. The owner tried to treat the pet for quite a long time, turned to professional veterinarians for help, but to no avail. The kitten was bald (it was a female). In February 1990, after mating with a European cat, the hairless cat gave birth to three furless kittens. From that moment on, Kovaleva seriously began breeding a unique breed. In 1996, a new breed of cat was officially registered - the Don Sphynx. These animals are divided according to the type of coat, namely:

  • naked: the skin is slightly sticky, without hair, hot and has a huge number of small folds;
  • flock: the surface of the body is covered with a small fluff, which usually disappears by the age of 2 years from birth;
  • velor: slightly noticeable wool (length 1-2 mm), velvety leather, reminiscent of suede;
  • brush: small thin hairs (length 2-3 mm), their structure is hard and elastic.

Don cats have a fairly developed, strong body, a straight back, a short tail and paws, a wedge-shaped head with a massive chin. The average height of an adult cat is 25-30 cm and weight 8-10 kg. Sphynxes are considered excellent companions; they are very affectionate and loyal, they love to be petted and scratched behind the ears. Surround your pet with care and warmth, and he will answer you in kind.

Where did the Thai cat come from?

Thais are the distant ancestors of modern Siamese cats. There is no doubt that the breed is ancient. Depictions of Thai cats date back to the fourteenth century.

Manuscripts with pictures depicting cats very similar to Thai ones are kept in the National Library in Bangkok. It was believed that they protected people from evil spirits.

Thai cats could also protect people from rats and snakes. Thanks to the peculiarities of the skin of the Thais, they were not afraid of the bites of these animals. Therefore, Vichien Mae (as the locals called the animals) were highly valued in Siam and it was strictly forbidden to export them outside the country.

And yet, at the end of the nineteenth century, Thais appeared in Europe. For the first time, two amazing cats were presented to English diplomats by the King of Siam. High-ranking people really liked the cats.

Then the king of Siam presented the British with several dozen more amazing animals.

Later, breeders became interested in the Thais and bred the Siamese cat, but the Thai cat was practically forgotten. But there were lovers who renewed the breed. For the first time, the breed of Thai cats (they are also called Old Siamese) was described and registered by the World Cat Federation in the 90s of the last century.

Description

Representatives of the Cornish look sophisticated and gentle, but behind this appearance there is a rather strong animal. Curly hair, strong bones and strong muscles, sharp claws and teeth - this is what distinguishes these cats.

Breed standards:

  • The head is egg-shaped or triangular, the muzzle is wedge-shaped, the nose is Roman type, the cheekbones are high and clearly defined.
  • The ears are wide at the base, cone-shaped, and set wide apart. The ends are rounded.
  • The eyes are slanted, widely spaced.
  • The neck is long and graceful.
  • The body is strong and agile, the body is slender, the stomach is tucked, and the waist is noticeable.
  • The tail is long and mobile.
  • The limbs are fine-boned, muscular, and there are long toes on the paws.
  • Soft and silky wool is the advantage of the breed. It fits tightly to the body, lies in even waves, and is curly.
  • The color can be different, including Siamese (in this case the cat is called a Si-rex).

Character and psychology of Thai cats

Animals with amazing character - this is how Thai cats can be characterized. Modern representatives of the breed behave the same way as their distant ancestors who lived under the kings, that is, like a king. Once in a family, they quickly understand that the cat is in charge and... condescendingly allow him to be their favorite. All other household members are recognized only partially.

Old Siamese have not only amazing intuition, but also intelligence. If there is a Thai cat in the house, it is not necessary to buy a tray for it; the plumbing equipment used by the rest of the family is sufficient.

Pets are surprisingly intelligent, easy to train and love to “chat”. The owner who has studied his pet will easily understand what he wants to tell him. At the same time, cats are very sensitive to the mood of their favorite, and will not bother you with “talks” if he is not in a good mood.

Pets are good companions for adults and nannies for children. After all, pets enjoy playing with their little owners. It is not dangerous to leave even the smallest children with a cat, since she perfectly understands that in front of her is a baby who cannot be offended and will not let go of her claws.

Thais are very self-sufficient, and at the same time affectionate and distinguished by dog-like devotion. Love and attention from the owner are very important for them.

Cohona

Kohona has a second name, namely, “Hawaiian Hairless”. This breed was bred in 1980 on the island of Hawaii, and this happened completely by accident. Cojones have been practically unstudied, so there is very little information about their origin. There are between 20 and 45 individuals worldwide. These cats are so rare that it is almost impossible to find them in ordinary nurseries. If you want to purchase this breed for yourself, you must negotiate with the breeder in advance to reserve a kitten. Cojones differ from other breeds in the following characteristic features: a complete absence of hair and hair follicles, thin and delicate skin, a huge number of small folds throughout the body, a ring-shaped tail, slightly rounded ears, and almond-shaped eyes. Cohon cats are very demanding of their owner; they need a lot of affection, care and attention. These pets are quite reserved and calm and get along well with other animals and small children. The average height is 15-18 cm, and weight is 7-9 kg.

How to choose a kitten

A baby without a passport can be purchased for 1,000 rubles. He will be a loyal and loyal friend, but is not suitable for exhibition or breeding. A real Thai cat costs from 15,000 rubles and above, depending on gender, pedigree, coat color, and cattery.

It is better to take kittens from a nursery with a good reputation. They must have the following advantages:

  • playfulness;
  • curiosity;
  • lack of fearfulness.

Signs of the breed are clean eyes and ears, as well as a tail without kinks. White spots should be excluded on points (muzzle, ears, paws, tail).

It is recommended to pick up the baby no earlier than he is three months old. By this time he should have all the necessary vaccinations. Pay attention to the kitten's behavior. If he gladly makes contact with them and strives to climb onto your lap, this is your pet.

Supplementary feeding

Newborn kittens eat every 1.5-2 hours. If the babies have a mother and she eats fully, which means she receives all the minerals and trace elements necessary for her situation, then her kittens will be well-fed and healthy. There are circumstances in which kittens will have to be supplemented with breast milk or completely switched to artificial feeding, for example, if:

  • the mother of the kittens did not survive or refused to feed the cubs;
  • the cat has infectious diseases or feeding kittens can deplete her body;
  • the cat has little milk - in this case, its nutrition should be increased;
  • there are too many kittens in the litter;
  • If the baby is too weak, the brothers take away the nipple or he cannot find it or suck on it.

How to care for a Thai cat

Thai cats are short-haired and therefore much easier to care for than Siberian or Persian cats. Pets themselves are very clean and require a minimum number of procedures.

It is better to comb your cat using special brushes, without using a furminator. It is enough to do the procedure once a month, and once a week simply run it over the fur with a damp hand.

If you are planning to visit an exhibition, it is necessary that the house be very warm for some time, since in the cold the cat's fur begins to darken.

You can bathe a cat no more than once a year. Do not use “human” shampoos, but purchase special ones for animals.

It is necessary to monitor your pets' eyes and ears, clean and wipe them as necessary.

An important attribute is a scratching post. To prevent your cat from damaging wallpaper and furniture, make it yourself or buy it. The pet will quickly understand what is required of it.

Also take care of the curtains. It is possible that the kitten will want to climb on them, so it is better to tie them higher.

When feeding a Thai cat, first of all, pay attention to the balance of the food. Do not overfeed your pet, but also make sure there is always enough food and water.

Thais will happily eat natural food. But when planning your diet, remember that a number of foods can cause darkening of color. This is seafood, liver. These products are not suitable for cats that will be attending shows.

The Thai diet should include:

  • meat (raw);
  • eggs (no more than once a week);
  • low-fat cottage cheese;
  • vegetables and fruits.

Sometimes you can give boiled fish, but not much. It must be excluded from the diet of pregnant cats. If your cat lives in an apartment, include greens in the diet. For this purpose, buy cereal seeds and sow them at home. It is also important for animals that they are served only fresh food for lunch.

Preparing for childbirth

Preparations for the birth of a Scottish cat need to begin in advance. A week before the approximate date, have a preventive examination with a veterinarian and arrange in advance for emergency care in case of need. Create as quiet and calm conditions as possible for your cat. Try to keep other pets away from her and do not allow children to disturb the animal.

Prepare a convenient box lined with old newspapers or blankets. Reward your animal for sleeping and resting inside. Bowls with food and water, as well as a tray, should be placed nearby. The box should be about 50x50x50 cm. An entrance is cut on one of the walls with a threshold 10–15 cm high so that the cat can easily climb inside, but small kittens have no way to get out.

You also need to prepare disposable diapers, scissors, alcohol for disinfection, thread, Vaseline and a heating pad in advance.

How to stay healthy

Pets of the Thai breed have good immunity, but this does not mean that they should refuse vaccinations. The health of these pets needs to be monitored like the health of any cat.

Cats may be susceptible to diseases of the liver, kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract. Although their genetics are good, there are a number of diseases that they are prone to. These are hydrocephalus, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and breast tumors.

Cats are also susceptible to dental disease. For prevention, it is recommended to regularly brush your teeth. With proper care of your pet, the risk of disease is reduced.

Ukrainian Levkoy

The Ukrainian Levkoy is considered a fairly new breed of hairless cat. These cats first appeared in the Russian nursery “LadaCats” in 2004. Ukrainian Levkoys were obtained by breeding the Don Sphynx and the Scottish Fold breed. The name "Levy" was borrowed from the flower of the same name, since the shape of the ears of these cats is very similar to this plant. Distinctive features of this breed are: an angular head shape, a slightly protruding forehead, slanted eyes, a medium-length neck, large ears (upright or curled) and a long tail that tapers slightly. The skin of Ukrainian cats can be of absolutely any shade, for example, light gray, black, white, brown. These cats are very friendly and cute creatures. They love to lie on a soft sofa, calmly watch what is happening, enjoying the company of their household members. Levkoys are considered sociable cats, so it is not recommended to leave them alone for a long time. The average height of an adult animal is 15-20 cm and weight 6-8 kg.

How to breed

In Russia, especially in large cities, there are good nurseries where you can buy a kitten or find a pair for mating. But still keep in mind that you need a purebred partner, so choose him very carefully. In addition, look for animals with good health so that it is passed on to the offspring.

The first mating should take place when the cat is one year old, although she reaches puberty already at six months, sometimes earlier.

Closely monitor your cat's pregnancy and the birth of kittens.

Thai cats are wonderful mothers. They give birth quickly and feed their offspring well. Quite often they give birth to up to seven kittens.

Hairless cats that look like fairy tale characters or aliens are becoming increasingly popular. Hairless cats are not a breed name, but a type name.

It includes representatives of different breeds, which have their own characteristics, be it the shape of the ears or the proportions of the body.

Cornish Rex

This breed of "plush" cat originated in the 1950s when a strange kitten with "plush" fur was born in cat houses. They called him Kalibunk. The cat's owner decided to cry, but the veterinarian saw the future founder of the new race in the kitten. Nina Ennismior, the cat's owner, became responsible for the development of this race and invented its name - Cornish Rex.

This race was close to extinction several times before it was finally registered by a felinological organization in 1983.

Bambino

Bambinos first appeared in the United States in 2006. This breed of cat was obtained by breeding the Canadian Sphynx and the Munchkin. Bambino is considered an experimental breed of hairless cats, so they are prohibited from participating in various exhibitions and competitions. These cats have a rather unusual appearance that distinguishes them from other members of the cat family. The following can be considered the characteristic features of the bambino: a complete absence of hair, even the smallest, short legs, a long elongated body, a round muzzle, a thin tail of medium length and small soft folds over the entire surface of the body. Bambinos are often called “dachshund cats” because of their similarity in appearance to this breed of dog. These pets love to play, they completely lack the instinctive feelings of a “hunter”, so they are not aggressive. Bambino cats are calm and indifferent towards other pets, small children and strangers, do not like to be left alone, and actively participate in family life. Being the owners of short legs, these cats are quite reluctant to run, so they prefer to climb various obstacles (buy your cat a special complex that has several floors). It is best to walk with your pet on a leash with a harness. The average height of an adult cat is 12-15 cm and weight 2-5 kg.
