Loving owners try to make the life of their pets as fulfilling and healthy as possible. They express their feelings by purchasing various products for cats and dogs: leashes, collars, houses, and so on. Nowadays, cat supplies are quite expensive. Many owners may not be able to afford this, since they could already spend money on a purebred pet. The article will tell you how to sew a cat house with your own hands, using patterns from the Internet, and what materials are best to use.

Which house to choose for a cat: types of houses, tips for arrangement

If you become the owner of a cat, sooner or later you will have to think about arranging a cat’s home. A cat needs a home, just like a person needs personal space. In its house, the cat will be able to rest peacefully; no one will touch it here.

If the cat does not have its own house, it will find a place for itself on its own. An animal may choose your closet with clothes as a home or find a place for itself on the sofa or table. If you don’t want this state of affairs, then it’s time to arrange a cozy house for your pet.

You can buy a ready-made cat house. Or you can make it with your own hands, putting your love and care into it. There are many advantages to a house made by yourself:

  • They are easy to make;
  • You can make a house of any size and configuration;
  • For production, improvised materials that can be found in your home are suitable;
  • Materials can be purchased, their cost will be significantly lower than that of a finished house;
  • If you like to make things, this activity will allow you to spend your leisure time in an interesting way;
  • Only the owner knows about the desires and habits of his pet, so he can easily make the house as comfortable as possible for the pet.

Important: Before you find a place for a house in your house or apartment, watch your cat. Surely there is a place in the apartment where she prefers to be most often. This is where you should place the house.

Also, if the cat is not litter box trained, it should be trained before it moves into its new home. Otherwise, the house will have to be washed regularly.

A cat house must meet the following criteria:

  1. Space . The dimensions of the cat's home must correspond to the size of the pet. In a small apartment it can be difficult to find a place for a large house, but a cat will not be comfortable in a house that is too cramped.
  2. Materials . To create a house, choose natural, breathable materials that can be easily cleaned if necessary.
  3. Place for games . It’s a good idea to make sure your cat has a place to sharpen its claws or play with a ball. The play complexes look original, and pets really like them.
  4. It is advisable that the cat house have a back door . Although this animal has long been a domestic animal, its instincts for survival and procreation come first. Having a back door will provide the animal with peace of mind and safety.
  5. The cats' housing should be slightly elevated. This will provide the cat with an overview of the territory , which is very important for the male. The cat’s home, on the contrary, should be lower. Such a house will satisfy the instinct of preserving the cat's offspring.

There are different types of cat houses. The choice of a certain type of house largely depends on the habits of the cat. Let's look at what types of houses there are for cats.

Beds

Looks like a miniature bed or sofa. This house does not have a roof. A cat will not be able to fully retire in such a house, but many pets get used to this type of house. The bed can be easily moved from one place to another, and you can take it with you on a trip. This is the advantage of this type of house.

Hammock

It is a mini version of a hammock for people. A hammock for cats can be placed without hesitation without compromising the area of the apartment. For example, under the seat of a chair by tying the edges of a hammock to the legs of the chair. Making a hammock with your own hands is as easy as shelling pears. It is enough to take a fairly thick piece of fabric, sew strings to its edges, and the hammock is ready.

Booths

Such a house with a roof is closed and allows the pet to be in complete privacy and tranquility at any time of the day. If the area of your apartment or house is large, the booth can become an interior decoration. Some people place similar houses in the courtyard of a private house.

Wigwam

A house with a pointed roof. Houses of this type are suitable for Siamese, Abyssinian or Bengal cats. Cats of these breeds love to stand on their tiptoes.

Complexes for games

Such a cozy corner is a real joy for an active pet. Such complexes are especially necessary if there are several cats in the house. Complexes can consist of various devices for cats, for example, stairs, beds, scratching posts, etc. The sizes of the complexes are also very different: from miniature to real labyrinths. If you have somewhere to place such a complex, your pet will have an extremely fun time.

House built into furniture

How to quickly and easily make a home for your beloved pet

Manufacturing Instructions

If you want to easily and quickly make a home for your beloved pet, the instructions will help you, which describe all the stages of production.

So what might you need?

  1. Large cardboard box. The size of the house will depend on the size of your cat, but on average it should be a house of 0.35 * 0.5 meters. What height should it be? The cat should freely enter the house and at the same time it should be comfortable to lie/sit in it.
  2. Scissors, glue, paper cutter.
  3. Soft material for upholstery - in this case, foam rubber, or voluminous soft fabric/batting will help you out, and an unnecessary old jacket or blanket will also do.
  4. Fabric for decoration - it is better to give preference to dense natural fabrics with calm colors; the use of bouclé fabric, faux fur and carpet is allowed.
  5. If you manage to find a box of the right size, then you should prepare it before starting work, namely, remove the labels and clean it with a stiff brush. If the box is very large or made of regular sheet cardboard, it may be worth cutting it out and assembling it.
  6. Now draw a hole on the end part, which should be large enough so that the cat can easily enter the house. If you have a kitten, circle a saucer on a piece of cardboard.
  7. After this, cut out the hole with the prepared cutter. If something turns out uneven, don’t worry, just make the diameter a little larger.
  8. Be sure to pay attention to gluing all the joints, since the house must be reliable and durable so that your tail can feel comfortable in it. It is better to carry out this process using tape or regular glue - all parts of the box should be glued to each other, and if necessary, the joints should be sealed with strips of paper or fabric.
  9. Next, you should thoroughly dry the product before the next manufacturing steps.
  10. Cover the house with soft material. To do this, use the material that you chose in advance and superglue, although it can be replaced with regular adhesive. It is also possible to sew fabric to cardboard, but keep in mind that the option with paper clips is definitely not suitable, as the kitten may accidentally start gnawing on it and get hurt or get caught with a claw, which will also be painful.
  11. After the house, which has been covered with soft material, has dried, you can move on to the penultimate stage, namely upholstery. First you need to make a pattern with allowances and then carefully glue the inside of the house. Try to keep the seams as small as possible. It is best to cover the seams with a large amount of overlapping fabric.
  12. And the last thing - all that remains is to sew a small pillow and a blanket from light material (observation - cats adore the terry fabric from which they make dressing gowns for the house, apparently a reminder of their mother). No, the cat, of course, will not cover herself with a blanket, but she will be able to crush it herself as it is convenient for her and create a warm nest.

As you can see, sewing a cat house using a pattern is not that difficult, but this is a standard option. Let's find out what manufacturing tips there are.

General recommendations

First, you will need to decide what materials to use. Most people are inclined to believe that cat houses are made only by those who were greedy for money to buy a ready-made structure. In fact, everything is completely different.

For what reasons is it worth making a house yourself and not buying houses from a pet store?

  • Yes, the issue of saving is clearly not the least important issue when it comes to making a cat house. Have you ever found out how much a really good cat house costs? From 12,000 to 20,000 rubles. The amount is impressive, and not every pet owner can afford it. Naturally, there are products on sale at a lower price, but usually they are made in the Middle Kingdom, and responsible owners will not risk the health of their beloved pet.
  • Originality of design. Some people want to create a unique piece for the interior, while for others the size of the house is important, while others may have dreamed all their lives of creating a real cat palace that is 100% safe and durable.
  • The love of making everything with your own hands is a great reason to make something for your cat. After all, you must admit that we now work so rarely with our hands that some people try to specifically find a reason, and one of them is to benefit their beloved cat, and this is far from the worst thing to do (better than swans made of tires).

How to make a house for a cat with your own hands from cardboard and boxes: step-by-step description, photo

Cardboard packaging is the cheapest material for a cat house. A house like this can be made very quickly. The advantage of housing made from cardboard packaging is that the material is inexpensive. Finding a box of the required dimensions is not a problem. It is enough to cut holes in it for entry and exit, put a soft mattress, and the house is considered ready. The cardboard house is lightweight. If necessary, you can move it to another location. These factors can be attributed to the positive aspects of a house made of this material.

The disadvantages of the house include its fragility. During active pet play, cardboard is easily damaged. A house like this cannot be washed or cleaned. Based on this, you will have to frequently update the cat’s home.

Simple box house for a cat

Many people don’t like the way a cardboard house looks. The appearance of ordinary cardboard packaging really does not have any aesthetics. But it can be beautifully decorated. Colored paper, fabric, buttons, bows and other decorative elements are suitable for this. The cardboard box can be covered with fabric; the fabric can be secured with glue or a stapler. Buttons and other decorative elements can be sewn on or glued on. The inside of the box can be painted and lined with soft fabric to keep the cat warm and comfortable. The end result is a pretty little house.

Cardboard house

You can make a house from corrugated cardboard. It is not difficult. For production you need the following materials:

  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Stationery knife
  • Compass
  • Glue

Manufacturing process:

  1. Draw a circle on a sheet of cardboard, and there are many more circles of smaller diameter in it.
  2. Then you need to cut out these circles using a stationery knife.
  3. Glue the rings together.
  4. Finally, glue the bottom of the house.
  5. Once the glue has dried, cut a hole for the entrance.

The good thing about this type of house is that, thanks to its textured surface, your pet can sharpen its claws. Typically, cats choose furniture for such purposes. But with such a house you won’t have to spoil the furniture.

How to make a house for a cat with your own hands from old clothes: step-by-step description, master class

Unnecessary clothes, namely a T-shirt or sweater, can get a chance for a second life. You can quickly make a tent house for your cat from these clothes.

To make such a house you will need:

  • Old T-shirt
  • Aluminum wire
  • Large sheet of thick cardboard or plywood
  • Glue
  • Scotch
  • Awl
  • Threads, needle

Step-by-step production:

  1. Take a sheet of cardboard measuring 40*40 cm. To make the cardboard more durable, cover it with tape. Instead of cardboard, you can take a sheet of plywood. This will be the basis for the future house. Use an awl to make holes in all corners of the base.
  2. Then take two pieces of aluminum wire of the same length. Make two identical arcs and connect them crosswise with tape.
  3. Then thread the edges of the wire through the holes in the base. Fold the edges and secure them very securely with tape. The pet should not get hurt on the edges of the wire.
  4. Now examine the frame of the cat house. It should be symmetrical. If the house is uneven, you can fix it. To do this, one of the uneven edges of the wire should be lowered lower or raised higher and fixed. But it’s better to immediately do everything evenly and symmetrically.
  5. Then you should put a T-shirt on the frame. The hole for the head should be placed in the center, and preferably closer to the bottom edge. This way it will be convenient for the cat to climb into the house.
  6. The sleeves of the T-shirt and free edges should be carefully folded down and sewn with a thread and a needle.
  7. Place a soft cloth inside that fits the size of the house.

Important: Large size T-shirts are suitable for making a house; children's T-shirts are definitely not suitable. The item must be ironed, without stains, without holes, so that the pet’s house looks beautiful and neat.

  • Another important point: the T-shirt must be made of cotton. Synthetic clothing can accumulate static charges. It is unlikely that your pet will like such a house.
  • Using the same principle, you can make a house out of a sweater. But it is better to shorten the sleeves so that they do not interfere when tucking them down. Such a house will become a warm refuge for your pet.
  • Instead of cardboard or plywood, you can use a small soft pillow. The wire can be made not arched, but pointed upward. Then you will get a wigwam house.
  • If you don’t know where to get the wire of the required length, wire hangers, which many people have at home, will come to the rescue. The hangers can be straightened using pliers, and you will get the necessary material for needlework.
  • You can make a soft, cozy cat house from an old sweater. You will also need a small soft pillow that can fit inside the sweater, foam rubber.

Built into furniture

Enterprising owners can come up with anything they can, and often adapt existing furniture into a cozy pet’s refuge .

The following pieces of furniture can be turned into a cat house:

  • a cabinet or small cabinet (bedside), cutting out a passage in the door;

  • a sofa by attaching cardboard or fabric tunnels to it, or placing a shelf with a lounger on the side;

  • a bookcase with a ladder attached so that the cat could use it to get to the very top and hide there;

  • a table or chair with a soft fabric hammock secured under it;

  • table, making an additional lower shelf with a lounger, pillow;

  • open shelves of cabinets, placing beds or low baskets or boxes on them;

  • shelves for flowers, setting aside the bottom shelf for the pet and the top for flowers.

For such transformations you will need simple tools that can be found in any home:

  • scissors, needle and thread;
  • hammer, nails;
  • screwdriver, self-tapping screws;
  • jigsaw (manual or electric);
  • glue, stapler for furniture.

Step by step description

Constructing a pattern

Draw a horizontal line. On it we draw two circles with a radius of 20 cm. The distance between the centers is 10 cm. We draw a tangent line along the upper and lower boundaries of the diameters. We have a pattern for the bottom of the house.

From these same centers we draw two more semicircles with a radius of 30 cm, connecting them with straight segments. This will be the base of the house's roof. From the center of each arc we draw straight lines on both sides of the horizontal at an angle of 45 degrees. We build cutouts symmetrically from them - see drawing.

We make the pattern for the side in the form of a rectangle 20 by 150 cm with a cutout - see drawing.

We mark out the parts and cut them out of foam rubber.

We assemble the structure by separately fastening the parts of the roof and side to the bottom.

Using the same patterns, we cut out the sheathing of the roof of the house and the side with the bottom. The outer lining is made of fabric, the inner lining is made of fur. When cutting, do not forget to add 15 mm to the allowances.

We sheathe the roof and the lower part of the house separately. We “complete” the cat’s house by covering the wall with a roof and securing it with a few hand stitches.

Cat wigwam

To make this simple design you will need:

  • upholstery fabric;
  • cardboard for walls and bottom;
  • sheet foam rubber or synthetic winterizer for insulation;
  • furniture stapler;
  • threads, needles.

How to sew a soft house

The pattern of the house is a square with a side of 45 cm. Isosceles triangles are added to it on each side. One of them has an entrance hole with a diameter of 20 cm. Most cats prefer these round windows or doors. But, if your cat has other preferences, change the shape and size of the window as desired.

The cardboard base of the wigwam can be either solid or made of separate panel parts.

A house assembled from several parts

We cut out every detail from the insulation. You can cut out several of these blanks for the bottom to make it softer. In addition, we recommend making a separate removable bedding that can be washed.

We insulate the panels with foam rubber, securing it with a stapler. As an alternative solution, you can simply sew insulation with thick threads.

We line the inside of the walls with soft fabric.

We connect the walls of the house and sew them with strong threads.

We make seams at the joints of the side panels, placing them right sides together. Carefully fold the entrance sections and hem them. If desired, the cut edges of this hole can be finished with bias tape.

You can also sheathe each wall of the house separately, then connect them into a common structure. The method of connecting the walls can be different: with Velcro, ribbons (sew narrow ribbons and sew them on each wall at the top and bottom). Another interesting option may be to connect the walls through the top with a decorative seam.

It is advisable to sew a zipper along the perimeter of the bottom - this will make it possible to conveniently monitor the cleanliness of the house.

The bottom is also insulated with foam rubber and lined with fabric. If you are making a detachable version of the design, then we sew the second zipper strip around the perimeter of the bottom.

One piece house

For a house sewn from one piece, we will be forced to make the seams at the joints of the walls external. But, this will only add originality to the cat wigwam.

We cut out the details of the internal and external cladding according to the pattern. It is better to make the foam walls and bottom in separate parts. On the wrong side of the cut out inner lining we place foam rubber parts at small intervals (equal to the thickness of the foam rubber) and secure them with pins. We attach every detail around the perimeter. We need the gaps left between the parts so that when the walls are lifted, they fit nicely and without overlays to the bottom.

We process the sections of the entrance window as for the first version of sewing a wigwam.

Next, we remove the fixing pins and assemble the overall structure.

We lay a cardboard base on the wrong side of the outer skin, and on it - the inner skin with sewn foam rubber (insulation down).

We chop off the details. We sew along the outer perimeter and along the sides of the square base. We sew the outer sections. The seam around the perimeter of the square can be done by hand. We raise the walls and sew them together with a decorative hand stitch.
