History of exotics
The breed dates back to the 1960s. The breeding of unusual cats happened by accident, since the original goal of the breeders was to improve the qualities of the American Shorthair by crossing with Persians. The main goal was to improve the quality of wool and obtain a wider range of colors. However, as a result of such mating, the offspring turned out to have an exotic appearance - short legs and neck, thick build, characteristic muzzle, snub nose. But despite the large number of traits inherited from the Persian breed, exotics did not receive long hair.
The Exotic Shorthair has been officially registered with most major cat associations. Initially, a proposal was put forward to name the breed “sterling”, that is, “silver”, however, this idea was abandoned.
History of the exotic breed
The breed was obtained by crossing a Persian cat and an American shorthair cat in the 60s of the 20th century in the USA. Thanks to this crossbreeding, breeders wanted to improve and diversify the color of the American Shorthair. The result was short-legged, short-haired kittens with flattened faces. The breeders were not very happy with the resulting offspring, but these charming creatures still won their hearts. In 1966, a breed standard was developed, in which exotics were supposed to be similar to Persian cats, but only with shorter fur. The breed was officially recognized in 1967, and in 1973 changes were made to the breed standard: the presence of a stop - a sharp nasofrontal transition - became mandatory .
Exotics were developed by crossing Persians with American Shorthair cats.
Exotics appeared in Russia in the early 1990s. Cat breeders really liked the breed, and to breed it they purchased animals from elite nurseries all over the world. Today, the exotic cat breed ranks first in popularity of cat breeds, having overtaken its descendants, the Persian cats, several years ago.
Exotics are jokingly called Persians for lazy people, meaning that their coat does not require special care and this fits perfectly into the life of a modern dynamic person.
Description of exotics
Representatives have not only a cute appearance, but also an easy-going character. Therefore, this breed is very common throughout the world.
Appearance
Externally, exotic shorthairs are similar to Persians. Cats are small in size, but have a dense, stocky build. One of the features is the short neck - despite the usual number of vertebrae for mammals, visually it seems that the head grows from the shoulder girdle. The weight of males reaches 7-8 kg, females weigh about 5 kg.
The main characteristic feature is a specific muzzle - representatives of the breed have large expressive eyes, pronounced cheeks and a snub nose, as well as a flattened muzzle. This structure gives exotic shorthairs a special charm.
Coat color is variable and has no clear restrictions. The hair, unlike Persians, is short, which makes it easier to care for the animal, but at the same time the cats look plush.
Exotic character
Exotic shorthairs have an easygoing disposition. These animals are friendly and love to spend time with their owner. Cats are kind to children, so an exotic cat will become a faithful friend for a child. Representatives of the breed are not characterized by aggression.
Despite their calm nature, exotic shorthairs differ from Persians in their more playful disposition - pets love active games. Cats love attention and affection, so they do not tolerate loneliness and separation from their owner. Representatives of the breed are very loyal to their owner; when meeting a new person, they can avoid contact with him for a long time.

I have had exotics living with me since 1999. They are very affectionate, intelligent animals. Exotics know their place. There are no problems with the toilet at all. Grooming time is minimal. The only thing you need to take care of is the Eyes. Just wash with boiled water. They are very attached to the owner. They greet you when you arrive and run to the front door. They get along well with children. If I choose which breed to buy, I would only buy an exotic one.

My girlfriend has 2 exotics, a father and a son. I have never seen larger phlegmata. They don’t go to your hands, they don’t purr, you may not find them in the apartment at all during the day. They come to eat and go to sleep or lie on the window.
My Oriental is a completely different character.

How I began to hate cats!!! Being a free woman, I had a cat and a non-pedigree cat)) I met my husband and his “favorite”... My favorite Persian-exotic breed. Compared to my living creatures, my husband’s cat turned out to be extremely arrogant. She is picky about food, if she went to the litter box once and it was not removed, the next time she will go to piss by or on the carpet. She climbs on the tables, she threw away a lot of food because this creature bites our food... and quietly takes revenge, you don’t know what to expect from it)) while we were moving in, we left her alone in the apartment with food and came to check, during this time the sofa was torn, the blanket was worn out made of sheep's wool (it was as if she specifically went to piss on him all the time) ... in general, it's creepy ... she puts her interests very highly))) she came up with her paw and woke me up after night shifts so that I could tell her to eat! In addition to the character, the breed itself is disgusting, there is fur all over the house, snot and eyes constantly need cleaning... In general, during all the time of my patience, I was convinced that simple cats are better.

An excellent breed for the home, especially if you have children. No matter how much I tortured them, they wouldn’t even let out their claws (my father has 4 Persians, 2 exotics, 2 classics). But it seemed to me that in comparison with ordinary cats (at that time I lived on the street), they were stupid and cats in particular were lazy.
The cats gave birth normally, there were never any problems with this

Exotics are very characteristic cats, they do only what they want, I have two exotics, a cat and a male cat, they will never sit in your arms if you pick them up, but they can come and pet them. This does not happen often... this is a feature of the breed, exotic Persians are very proud and independent creatures, they allow themselves to be loved, they also love themselves, but somehow in their own way. And this must be respected. With the wrong upbringing and attitude, exotics turn into wild and uncontrollable monsters. I had a cat like this, I took her in as an adult, her owners couldn’t cope with her, she attacked and scratched. I spent six months on rehabilitation, in the end the cat turned out to be very soulful, but she got cancer and died... I’m still crying...

The Exotic Shorthair is the cutest cat breed. amazingly cute little face, with plush fur and a wonderful character. A good friend who will not betray you. There are no difficulties in the content. But like any animal, it loves attention and affection. Scratch the kitten behind the ear, stroke its tummy and it will make you happy
you with a satisfied purr. Has a light and playful character. Well mannered and easy to care for, they are truly considered the perfect pets. My daughter is just crazy about the cat. Our pet is almost 6 years old. We are all delighted with him
Advantages:
Does not require heavy maintenance. Wonderful character. Easy to care for. One of the advantages is the fur - medium long, thick, soft and feels like plush, which makes it a pleasure to stroke the kitten. Teddy bear with a cute, “sweet” expression on his face - Exotic Cat

I have an exotic with a pedigree, with all the documents. Very handsome...) But his character is just a nightmare. Not only is he not affectionate, but he also destroys furniture. And it lunges at people and bites. I read about this breed, all over the Internet it is written that they are very affectionate and sweet. Apparently mine is an exception. I still love him very much))))

I adopted a male kitten of an exotic breed, 1.5 months old. I've had him for 4 weeks now, but I just can't get him used to the litter tray, plus on top of all this, he throws himself on his arms and legs and when I leave the room he starts screaming hysterically, if I ignore him, he climbs onto the table and cabinets and starts to spite throws things off (cups, napkins, in general, everything he sees), although he doesn’t do this in front of me and I generally forbid him to climb on the table.

Advantages:
incredibly beautiful, kind, do not like loneliness, very affectionate, not aggressive, not touchy
Flaws:
No
For a very long time I wanted to buy a kitten of an exotic breed - I read a lot of reviews that this breed is very good.
Cats of this breed are friendly and calm. Their coat is quite short and plush to the touch. They do not like loneliness and become very attached to their owner. They, like all cats, are quite curious. The character is peaceful, they will silently look at any irritant with bewilderment on their face. They can release their claws only out of fear, and they always touch their owners only with their soft paws.
A year ago I managed to buy a wonderful cat, whose name is Camry.
